Eight Therapeutic Methods in TCM for Treating Leukemia
Although leukemia is referred to as “blood cancer,” I believe it should not be equated with cancer. Leukemia is a hematopoietic system disorder caused by heat-toxin. Through TCM syndrome differentiation and treatment, we can adjust and improve organ functions, gradually unblock obstructed meridians, and combine dietary therapy and physical exercise to help leukemia patients regain health. My therapeutic principles for leukemia can be summarized in two aspects: first, enhancing the body’s own immunity by tonifying the kidneys, supplementing qi, and nourishing yin to activate normal cells and inhibit leukemia cells; second, balancing blood parameters by clearing damp-heat and detoxifying to normalize blood and bone marrow profiles. Generally, acute granulocytic leukemia focuses on detoxification, acute lymphocytic leukemia emphasizes resolving nodules, chronic granulocytic leukemia combines both detoxification and nodular resolution, while chronic lymphocytic leukemia requires nodular resolution combined with qi and blood supplementation. There are two main types of medication: “Qubai Capsule” is a fixed formula suitable for all types of leukemia; “Qubai Pill” is flexibly formulated according to individual conditions, with auxiliary and backup herbs tailored to specific cases. We have observed that leukemia patients present diverse clinical features: anemia, bleeding, rashes, petechiae, bone pain with fever, enlarged lymph nodes or liver/spleen, ulcers, etc. Using the four diagnostic methods and eight categories of TCM, we have developed eight therapeutic approaches for leukemia: tonifying the kidneys, detoxifying, activating blood, stopping bleeding, resolving nodules, clearing dampness, strengthening qi and nourishing yin, regulating yin-yang balance. These are targeted treatments addressing different symptoms, achieving ideal outcomes. In summary, the fundamental principle of TCM treatment for leukemia is to strengthen deficiencies and reduce excess—i.e., supporting righteousness and eliminating evil. Supporting righteousness includes tonifying the kidneys, supplementing qi, and nourishing yin; eliminating evil includes clearing heat and toxins, activating blood circulation, breaking up stasis, softening hardness, dispersing nodules, and clearing dampness. The ultimate goal is to restore dynamic balance within the body. Unlike chemotherapy, this approach has fewer side effects, lower cost, and better efficacy, making it highly popular among patients. For example, a leukemia patient from Qingdao Watch Factory, who had been declared critical, recovered completely after treatment with this method and has remained free of recurrence for over five years.
