Allergic Purpura

🔑 Keywords: Skin · Urticaria
Allergic purpura is an allergic vasculitis affecting capillaries and small arteries in the skin or other organs. It is primarily triggered by allergies, commonly presenting as purpura, hence its name. Traditional Chinese medicine offers several advantages in treating allergic purpura: first, herbal medicines are natural with minimal toxicity and side effects, especially suitable for individuals with allergic constitutions. Second, since this condition often results from drug allergies, avoiding chemical agents prevents further allergic reactions. In TCM, allergic purpura is typically classified into two syndromes for treatment. For the "Blood Heat and Uncontrolled Flow" type: acute onset, sudden appearance of purple spots on the skin—small as pinpricks or as large as chestnuts or coins—may gradually merge and do not fade under pressure. Accompanying symptoms include fever, headache, joint pain, and short, red urine. Suitable patent medicines include Silver Flower Detoxifying Pill, Lotus Leaf Pill, and Antelope Horn Lung-Clearing Pill. Herbal decoction may use the following empirical formula: Fairy Grass 30g, Fresh Rehmannia 30g, Red Peony Root 10g, Tree Peony Bark 10g, White Reed Rhizome 15g, Purple Herb 10g, Sophora Root 10g, Koushou Seed 10g, Lotus Node 10g, Eucommia 9g. Decoct and take twice daily, 150ml per dose. For the "Spleen Failure to Control Blood" type: chronic recurrence, dark purple and flat skin lesions that do not fade under pressure. Accompanying symptoms include pale complexion, shortness of breath, fatigue, poor appetite, and loose stools. Suitable patent medicines include Ginseng-Return-Spleen Pill and Ginseng Strengthening-Spleen Pill. Herbal decoction may use the following empirical formula: Astragalus 12g, Codonopsis 12g, Atractylodes 10g, Five-Flower Powder 10g, Polygala 10g, Fairy Grass 10g, Purple Herb 10g, Angelica 10g, Poria 10g, Longan Meat 10g, Eucommia 9g. Decoct and take twice daily, 150ml per dose. Dietary therapy: boil 15g jujube and 15g Artemisia Capillaris, drink as tea. Alternatively, boil 15g jujube, 30g white reed rhizome, and 15g Salvia miltiorrhiza, drink as tea. Or boil 15g pig’s hoof horn and 50g peanuts, consume as a single dose twice daily. Individuals with a history of allergies such as allergic rhinitis, allergic asthma, or frequent urticaria due to penicillin or sulfonamide allergies should pay attention to dietary adjustments, avoiding foods that trigger the condition, such as fish, shrimp, milk, eggs, and seafood. Even without clear food triggers, avoid fish, shellfish, spicy, hot, and stimulating foods that can provoke wind and phlegm. Regular physical exercise is also recommended to strengthen the body and enhance resistance to disease. Pay special attention to warmth during seasonal changes or temperature fluctuations to prevent colds and tonsillitis. Seek timely treatment when ill. For those with recurrent tonsillitis, consider tonsillectomy. Address chronic foci promptly. Avoid overuse of medication once ill to prevent drug-induced triggers. Ensure adequate rest, elevate the affected limbs while lying down, reduce standing and walking, and prevent complications.<Allergic Purpura>
