【Function and Indications】
Function: Activating blood, resolving stasis, clearing heat, calming the spirit. Indicated for premenstrual mania and mental excitement before menstruation.
【Prescription Composition】
Sparganium 10–20g, Curcuma 10–20g, Safflower 6–10g, Peach Kernel 10–24g, Salvia 10g, Raw Rhubarb 10–15g, Jujube 7 pieces, Achyranthes 15g, Licorice 6g, decocted in water.
【Syndrome Differentiation and Modifications】
Add Mustard Seed 10g and Pinellia 10g for confusion of mind; add Ziziphus 12g and Poria 30g for palpitations and insomnia; add Buddha’s Hand Flower 10g and Albizia Bark 10g for low mood; add Coptis 6g for agitation; add Dragon Bone 30g, Oyster Shell 30g, and Magnetite 30g for fright, hallucinations.
【Clinical Efficacy】
Treated 40 cases: 8 cured, 24 markedly improved, 5 improved, 3 ineffective; total effective rate 92.5%.

【Comment】
This condition manifests as mental excitement before menstruation, similar to “blood accumulation causing madness” or “heat entering the blood chamber” in traditional Chinese medicine. The use of Sparganium, Curcuma, Peach Kernel, and Safflower activates blood and breaks up stasis; Salvia nourishes blood, activates blood, and calms the heart; Rhubarb clears heat and resolves stasis, purges the bowels to relieve heat; Jujube and licorice moderate and harmonize; Achyranthes guides the medicinal effect. Together, they regulate Qi, resolve stasis. If mental symptoms are prominent, Sparganium and Curcuma may be increased to 20g; otherwise, reduce dosage or omit them, adding Angelica, White Peony, and Fresh Rehmannia to nourish blood and activate blood. For obvious blood-heat, increase Rhubarb to 30g; when abdominal pain is unbearable, increase Peach Kernel to 24g; for loose stools, replace raw Rhubarb with processed Rhubarb to retain its blood-activating function.
