Treatment of Pregnancy Disorders in Women, Pulse and Syndrome Patterns, Chapter Twenty

Treatment of Pregnancy Disorders in Women, Pulse and Syndrome Patterns, Chapter Twenty
The Master said: When a woman has a normal pulse, with a weak yin pulse, thirst but unable to eat, no chills or fever, this condition is called pregnancy, and Gui Zhi Tang should be used. Formula found in the section on diarrhea.
According to the rule, this symptom should appear around 60 days; if improperly treated, causing further delay by one month with vomiting and diarrhea, then it should be terminated. If a woman has a pre-existing mass condition, and menstruation stops before three months, yet continuous bleeding occurs, with fetal movement felt above the navel, this is considered a chronic mass disease. Fetal movement at six months indicates that the fetus was present during the first three months when menstruation was regular. Bleeding occurring after that period indicates blood stasis from the last three months. The reason bleeding continues is because the underlying mass remains unremoved, so the mass must be eliminated using Gui Zhi Fu Ling Wan.
Gui Zhi Fu Ling Wan Formula: Cinnamon twig, Poria, Peony (without heart), White peony root, and Peach kernel (without skin and tip, roasted), each in equal parts. Mix the five ingredients into powder, make pills with honey as large as rabbit droppings, take one pill before meals daily. If ineffective, increase to three pills.
If a woman is pregnant for six or seven months, her pulse is wiry and she feels feverish, the fetus becomes more distended, and she experiences abdominal pain and aversion to cold, with a sensation like cold air blowing on the lower abdomen—this happens because the uterus is open. Therefore, Fu Zi Tang should be used to warm the organs. Formula not provided.
The Master said: Some women have continuous bleeding, others have postpartum bleeding that persists after half-delivery, and some experience bleeding during pregnancy. If a pregnant woman has abdominal pain, this is known as "fetal obstruction," and Jiao Ai Tang should be used.
Jiao Ai Tang Formula: One version adds dry ginger one liang. Hu's formula for fetal movement in women does not include dry ginger. Chuan Xiong, Colla Corii Asini, licorice, each two liang; mugwort leaf, angelica root, each three liang; white peony root four liang; Rehmannia root four liang. Mix the seven ingredients with five sheng water and three sheng clear wine, boil down to three sheng, remove residue, add colla corii asini, let it dissolve completely, then take one sheng warm, three times daily. If ineffective, prepare again.
If a pregnant woman has abdominal pain, Dang Gui Shao Yao San should be used.
Dang Gui Shao Yao San Formula: Dang Gui three liang; white peony root one jin; Chuan Xiong half jin (or three liang); Poria four liang; Ze Xie half jin; Bai Zhu four liang.
Mix the six ingredients into a powder, take one square inch measure mixed with wine, three times daily.
If a pregnant woman suffers from severe nausea and vomiting, Gan Jiang Ren Shen Ban Xia Wan should be used.
Gan Jiang Ren Shen Ban Xia Wan Formula: Dry ginger, ginseng, each one and a half liang; Pinellia rhizome two liang. Powder the three ingredients, mix with fresh ginger juice to form pills as large as paulownia seeds, take ten pills with drink, three times daily.
If a pregnant woman has difficulty urinating but maintains normal appetite, Gu Mu Ku Shen Wan should be used.
Dang Gui Bei Mu Ku Shen Wan Formula: Dang Gui, Bei Mu, Ku Shen, each four liang. Powder the three ingredients, make pills with honey as large as small beans, take three pills with drink, increasing to ten pills. If a pregnant woman has fluid retention, heaviness in the body, difficulty urinating, chills with trembling, dizziness upon standing, Qu Zi Fu Ling San should be used.
Qu Zi Fu Ling San Formula: Qu Zi one sheng ("sheng" written as "jin" in some editions); Poria three liang. Crush into powder, take one square inch measure with drink, three times daily, stop when urination improves.
A woman who is pregnant should commonly take Dang Gui San.
Dang Gui San Formula: Dang Gui, Huang Qin, white peony root, Chuan Xiong, each one jin; Bai Zhu half jin. Crush into powder, take one square inch measure with wine or water, twice daily. Regular use during pregnancy facilitates childbirth, prevents fetal discomfort, and treats all postpartum diseases.
To nourish the fetus during pregnancy, Bai Zhu San should be used.
Bai Zhu San Formula: Found in *Outer Platform*. Bai Zhu four fen; Chuan Xiong four fen; Sichuan pepper three fen (remove sweat); oyster shell two fen. Crush into powder; take one qian measure with wine, three times daily, once at night. If there is severe pain, add white peony root; if there is severe heartache, double the Chuan Xiong; if there is irritability, vomiting, and inability to eat, add fine cinnamon one liang, twenty large pieces of Pinellia, take after medication, follow with vinegar water. If vomiting persists, take vinegar water again; if still unresolved, take wheat broth. After recovery, continue taking without stopping.
If a woman injures her fetus, with abdominal fullness during pregnancy, inability to urinate, heaviness below the waist, resembling fluid retention, and at seven months of pregnancy, the spleen should nourish but fails to do so—this indicates excessive heart qi. Acupuncture should be applied to the Laogong and Guanyuan points to drain excess heat. Mild urination improvement will lead to recovery.
