Should You See a Doctor for Itchy Nipples?

Many women occasionally experience itching of the nipple or areola, which may simply be due to allergy, but could also be an early sign of breast cancer—thus, it should not be ignored.
Additionally, a rare condition called Paget’s disease may present with eczema-like symptoms around the nipple and areola, accompanied by itching, stinging, burning sensations, and sometimes dark red discoloration, bloody discharge, or painless hard lumps.
If the nipple is not only itchy but also discharges fluid, besides possible inflammation, it might indicate a more serious issue. When discharge appears yellow, white, milky, or green, proper treatment usually leads to recovery. However, if the discharge is dark red or bloody, one must be especially cautious about the possibility of breast cancer, as approximately 5% of cases of nipple inflammation are caused by breast cancer.
Although Paget’s disease is rare, its symptoms closely resemble those of common eczema, so many women tend to overlook it, potentially delaying early diagnosis and treatment. Therefore, if you experience itching of the nipple or areola along with discharge, or a painless lump, for peace of mind, it is recommended to visit a general surgery or breast surgery department for further examination to confirm the condition.
