Regulation of Breast Disease Associated with Menstrual Disorders
Breast tissue is a target organ for sex hormones; thus, hormonal imbalance can lead to breast nodules and pain, as well as manifest as menstrual disorders, including early or delayed menstruation, reduced or increased menstrual flow, dark purple or pale red blood color. Menstrual irregularities are often related to dysfunction of zang-fu organs, qi, blood, and meridians, particularly involving the liver, spleen, and kidney. For example, early menstruation with excessive flow, pale red blood, loose stools, and fatigue indicate deficiency of both liver and kidney qi and blood. Treatment includes: 9 g of white ginseng, steamed with rock sugar, consumed over 3–4 days. For heat excess, add 12 g of raw rehmannia, 9 g of lycium root bark, 9 g of scrophularia, remove mugwort and prepared ginger. Mild cases may use Ren Shen Yang Rong Wan or Wu Ji Bai Feng Wan.
If early menstruation or excessive bleeding results from blood heat, symptoms include flushed cheeks, hot palms and soles, dry mouth with little saliva, dizziness, blurred vision, red tongue, and rapid pulse. Treatment includes: 12 g of raw rehmannia, 9 g of lycium root bark, 9 g of scrophularia, 6 g of donkey-hide gelatin (melted), 9 g of white peony, 9 g of yellow chrysanthemum, 15 g of hedyotis, 9 g of goji berries, 12 g of codonopsis, 3 g of fried licorice, taken once daily. If menstruation comes early with heavy flow, dark purple blood with clots, lower abdominal pain, dark purple tongue with ecchymosis, and wiry-thin pulse, this indicates blood stasis obstructing the uterus. Treatment involves activating blood circulation and removing stasis: 15 g of angelica, 12 g of salvia, 12 g of eupatorium, 2 g of peach kernel, 30 g of motherwort, 15 g of achyranthes, 9 g of processed aconite, 9 g of spikenard, 12 g of white atractylodes, taken once daily.
