Pediatric mouth ulcers
Pediatric mouth ulcers are a common oral condition in children. It is characterized by shallow yellowish or grayish ulcerative lesions of varying numbers and sizes on the oral mucosa of lips, cheeks, palate, gums, and edges of the tongue, accompanied by redness and pain around the sores. This condition is commonly caused by accumulated heat in the spleen and stomach, upward inflammation of heart fire, or deficiency fire ascending. The following clinically effective folk remedies are commonly used.
[Formula One]
Tomatoes, several pieces. Wash tomatoes, soak in boiling water, peel off skin and remove seeds, squeeze juice through clean gauze. Hold tomato juice in mouth as long as possible, repeat several times daily.
This formula is suitable for mouth ulcers due to spleen-stomach heat accumulation.
[Formula Two]
One watermelon, a small amount of sugar. Remove seeds from watermelon flesh, cut into strips, sun-dry until half-dry, mix with sugar, dry again, then add a little more sugar.
Regular consumption can treat mouth ulcers, eye redness, feverish conditions, and thirst due to diabetes.
[Formula Three]
500 g loofah, an appropriate amount of rock sugar. Wash loofah including skin, cut into chunks, boil with adequate water into soup, season with rock sugar. Drink the soup; the loofah may be eaten or not.
This formula is effective for mouth ulcers caused by spleen-stomach heat.
[Formula Four] Raw Rehmannia 15 g, raw gypsum 30 g, glutinous rice 30 g. Boil raw gypsum for one hour, filter out residue, extract juice, then combine with raw Rehmannia and glutinous rice to cook porridge, once daily.
This formula is suitable for mouth and tongue ulcers with oral heat and foul odor.
[Formula Five]
6 g light bamboo leaf, 1.5 g lotus stem, 100 ml human milk (or cow’s milk). First decoct bamboo leaf and lotus stem, extract 10 ml of liquid, mix into milk and stir well. Take several times daily, no fixed quantity.
This formula is suitable for infant thrush, mouth and tongue sores, red urine, and infant night crying.
[Formula Six]
One fresh lotus leaf, 500 g fresh winter melon, a little salt.
Boil lotus leaf and winter melon with water, season with salt, drink soup and eat winter melon.
In addition to treating pediatric mouth ulcers, this formula also applies to thirst and irritability in summer, lung heat cough, thick yellow phlegm, and short red urine.
[Formula Seven]
Raw Rehmannia 6 g, large green leaf 6 g, raw gypsum 9 g, flos paeoniae 9 g, glutinous rice 30 g, appropriate amount of sugar. Decoct first four ingredients, filter out residue, add glutinous rice and sugar, cook into porridge. One dose per day, consume continuously for 3–4 days.
This formula is suitable for pediatric vesicular stomatitis caused by deficiency fire ascending.
[Formula Eight]
Unlimited amount of red persimmon, 50 g glutinous rice, a little honey. Sift red persimmon to obtain juice, mix with glutinous rice to cook porridge, add honey, serve as meal.
This formula is suitable for fever-induced thirst, dry cough with hemoptysis, mouth ulcers, and tongue erosion.
[Formula Nine]
Equal amounts of fireplace earth and bamboo leaf. Boil fireplace earth, clarify the liquid, then decoct bamboo leaf in the clear liquid, extract juice, use as tea substitute.
This formula is suitable for oral ulcers due to deficiency of heart and spleen yin-fluids and false fire rising upward.
[Formula Ten]
10–12 g silver ear fungus, appropriate amount of rock sugar. Wash silver ear fungus, place in bowl, add cold boiled water to cover, soak for about one hour until swollen. Remove impurities, add more cold boiled water and rock sugar, steam until cooked, consume in one meal or divided meals. Eat silver ear fungus and drink the broth, once daily.
