Bone-Strengthening and Waist-Strengthening Formula 4
500 grams of raw chestnuts. Steam raw chestnuts until cooked, dry in air, store for later use. Consume 10 chestnuts daily, chew thoroughly.
The original formula treats elderly foot qi, kidney deficiency with qi depletion, weak legs and knees, and general fatigue. Chestnuts are sweet and warm, excellent for nourishing the kidney, strengthening the waist, and reinforcing tendons. Particularly beneficial for the elderly. Su Zhe, brother of the famous poet Su Dongpo, once wrote a poem describing how his old age brought waist and leg problems, but he was cured by a mountain elder’s method of consuming chestnuts. Chestnuts contain B-complex vitamins, which also help prevent beriberi. Chestnuts can also be combined with glutinous rice to make porridge, which both nourishes the kidney and strengthens the waist and knees, and benefits qi and thickens the intestines. Suitable for those with kidney deficiency and weak legs, or spleen deficiency with diarrhea. The *Compendium of Materia Medica* records chestnut porridge. Avoid eating chestnuts alone or by those with weak digestion—opt for porridge instead.
Consuming too many chestnuts at once may cause stagnation and indigestion, so it is better to eat small amounts over a prolonged period.
