Bone-Strengthening and Waist-Strengthening Formula 10
250 grams Polygonatum, 50 grams Asparagus cochinchinensis, 150 grams Rehmannia glutinosa, and an appropriate amount of ox bone oil. Take Polygonatum, Rehmannia glutinosa, and Asparagus cochinchinensis, add water, and decoct every 20 minutes for a total of three times. Combine all decoctions, then simmer over low heat until thickened into a paste. Add an appropriate amount of ox bone oil, stir continuously while cooking until the mixture reaches a膏状 (paste-like consistency), then remove from heat. Cool and store in a bottle. Take two spoons each time, accompanied by warm wine, twice daily.
This formula selects three commonly used tonic herbs in ancient times. Polygonatum "widens the middle energizer, benefits qi, tonifies the five zang organs, improves muscle quality, fills the marrow, strengthens tendons and bones, and prolongs life" (Yinshan Zhengyao). Rehmannia glutinosa tonifies liver and kidney, nourishes yin and blood, and fills the marrow. Research shows that Rehmannia decoction has effects similar to adrenal cortex hormones on rheumatoid and rheumatic arthritis. Asparagus cochinchinensis nourishes yin, supplements deficiency, and strengthens the body. Experimental studies indicate that extracts of Asparagus cochinchinensis have efficacy against rheumatoid arthritis. Combined with the sweet-warm herb ox bone oil, which tonifies the center, fills the marrow, and boosts vitality, long-term use increases longevity. Together, these four ingredients achieve the effect of tonifying essence and marrow, strengthening tendons and bones, and prolonging life. Consumed with warm wine, it promotes blood circulation and prevents excessive greasiness and stickiness of the ingredients. Ox bone oil contains high levels of saturated fatty acids, which easily deposit in arterial walls forming atherosclerotic plaques, promoting atherosclerosis. Most plant oils contain beta-sitosterol, which inhibits cholesterol absorption, beneficial for preventing hyperlipidemia and atherosclerosis. From the perspective of both strengthening tendons and bones while preventing cardiovascular disease, this formula should reduce the amount of ox bone oil and appropriately increase plant oils such as soybean oil, corn germ oil, or peanut oil, resulting in more ideal health benefits.
