Five Methods for Beautiful Teeth
Esthetic dentistry is a new concept and discipline in modern medical cosmetic science. When meeting people, teeth are usually visible, so dental appearance most reflects one’s personal charm. A healthy and beautiful set of teeth should be free from disease, well-aligned, white, odorless, and capable of normal chewing function. Modern dental aesthetic techniques include whitening, scaling, mouthwash, porcelain crowns, veneers, resin bonding, and powder polishing, among which the first five methods are widely used.
Whitening
Whitening is generally divided into external and internal types. External whitening targets the tooth surface, using agents to demineralize and remove long-term mineral deposits, revealing the natural color—chalky white. The agents typically used are strong oxidizing agents like high-concentration hydrogen peroxide. External whitening differs from regular cleaning, which only removes surface debris; a white tooth isn’t necessarily healthy, as poor calcification can also cause whiteness. Only through external demineralization can the true condition of teeth be revealed.
Internal whitening is applied for necrotic pulp conditions. Whitening agents are injected into the root canal of discolored teeth, then sealed to prevent leakage into the body. This method requires higher medical expertise, but once successful, the whitening effect lasts long-term.
Laser whitening is another type of whitening method, combining laser energy with chemical agents to rapidly demineralize teeth. While laser provides additional energy, the main action still comes from the chemical agent.
Scaling
The second whitening method is scaling, using ultrasonic technology to remove soft plaque, pigments, and tartar on the tooth surface—commonly caused by smoking or drinking tea. Ultrasonic vibrations at high frequency achieve whitening effects, lasting about six months to one year. For those with poor oral hygiene or periodontal disease, scaling should be done every three months.
Mouthwash
Mouthwash is a common daily oral hygiene practice. It uses broad-spectrum antibiotics in water to maintain oral health, suppress bacterial growth, prevent periodontal disease, and keep teeth fresh throughout the day.
Porcelain Crowns
Porcelain crowns, also known as porcelain jacket crowns or porcelain restorations, are permanent dental repair solutions. With good craftsmanship, they can last ten years or more. The principle involves combining metal and porcelain—metal inside, porcelain outside—for strength and resistance to fracture. They act like caps placed over teeth, causing minimal side effects on health. Different metals have varying biocompatibility; precious metals integrate better with the human body and cause less irritation.
Veneers
Veneers can be either ordinary resin veneers or porcelain veneers. Ordinary resin veneers involve removing part of the tooth structure and bonding resin to the surface, preserving the original shape. Porcelain veneers combine advantages of both porcelain crowns and resin veneers. In terms of aesthetics, they can replace porcelain crowns and serve as a premium solution for yellowing teeth. They are custom-made based on dental models, then bonded to the tooth surface via adhesive techniques, appearing lifelike and attractive. Compared to resin, they overcome drawbacks such as staining and wear, and when properly done, can remain intact for seven to eight years. <Beautiful Teeth>
