Folk Remedies for Preventing Age Spots
As people age, many develop brown spots on their face or hands—commonly known as age spots. These usually appear around age 50, especially when weight gain occurs or women enter menopause.
Traditional Chinese medicine believes that aging leads to weakened lung qi and insufficient defensive qi, resulting in inadequate nourishment of the skin and pores—the fundamental cause of age spots. Modern medicine attributes age spots primarily to weakened cellular metabolism in older adults. When excessive fat is consumed, oxidation occurs easily, producing brown pigment. This pigment cannot be excreted by cells and accumulates on cell surfaces, accelerating aging and forming age spots.
To prevent age spot formation, first adjust dietary fat intake so that fat accounts for 25%–50% of total calories.
Here are some simple lifestyle tips proven effective in reducing age spots:
▲ Ginger:
Ginger contains various active compounds, including gingerol, which strongly counters lipofuscin. Wash and slice ginger into pieces or strips, steep in boiling water for 10 minutes, then add one tablespoon of honey and stir well. Drink one cup daily without interruption—this can significantly reduce age spots. Alternatively, finely chop ginger, mix with salt, monosodium glutamate, and chili oil, and consume regularly.
▲ Onion:
Contains abundant cysteine, which delays aging. Can be eaten raw or cooked.
▲ Garlic:
Thinly slice garlic and apply directly to age spots, rubbing repeatedly until the skin turns red and inflamed. Repeat 3–5 times daily.
▲ Tremella and Quail Eggs:
Use 50g of rehydrated tremella and 3 cooked quail eggs. Add a small amount of yellow wine, monosodium glutamate, and salt, then slowly stew until soft. Consume once daily.
▲ Almonds:
Use enough almonds, remove skins, mash into a paste, mix with egg whites. Apply to affected areas before bedtime, rinse off with warm water in the morning.
▲ Poria:
Grind poria into fine powder, mix with egg whites, apply to affected areas before bedtime, rinse off with warm water in the morning.
▲ Vitamins:
Puncture vitamin E and vitamin A capsules, apply the contents directly to age spots, three times daily. Also take 500mg vitamin C and 100mg vitamin E daily. Additionally, vitamins A, B1, and B2 help soften, smooth, and moisturize the skin, reduce wrinkles, fade pigmentation, and eliminate spots.
▲ Anti-Aging Herbs:
Herbs such as ginseng, astragalus, ganoderma, tremella, and hawthorn, when taken long-term, can help suppress and eliminate age spots.
▲ Other Methods:
Engage in moderate exercise, avoid prolonged sun exposure and abnormal stimuli, and use sunscreen. For few age spots, laser or cryotherapy surgery can remove them. For numerous spots, use 5-fluorouracil ointment externally, or try folk methods: pat the back of the hand 100 times daily until red and warm, then rub 100 times. Within two to three months, age spots may disappear naturally.
