Spring Warming Therapy for Spleen and Kidney Health

🔑 Keywords: Health Food Recipes · The current air is moist yet not hot—ideal timing for health preservation, primarily focusing on regulating the spleen and kidneys. TCM regards the spleen and kidneys as the foundation of postnatal vitality and the source of blood and qi production. When spleen and kidney functions are robust, nutrients are fully utilized; otherwise, deficiencies arise, weakening constitution. Tang Dynasty physician Sun Simiao said: "In spring, reduce sour flavors and increase sweet ones to nourish the spleen," emphasizing the importance of spleen and kidney regulation during this season. Thus, we recommend:
Lotus Seed and Water Chestnut Sea Worm Soup
This soup has a clear, refreshing, and fragrant flavor, offering benefits including strengthening the spleen and kidneys, enriching blood and qi, and stopping diarrhea. It is also suitable for spleen-kidney deficiency presenting symptoms such as poor appetite, low food intake with loose stools, frequent urination, restless sleep, thirst, or chronic diarrhea and dysentery with weak physique. Spring often sees loose stools and diarrhea caused by spleen-kidney insufficiency and impaired transformation and transportation. This soup serves as an excellent auxiliary treatment.
[Ingredients] 20 g lotus seeds, 20 g water chestnuts, 30 g dried sea worms, 250 g lean pork, 2–3 slices of ginger.
Dried sea worms are neutral in nature, sweet and salty in taste, benefiting the spleen and kidneys while enriching blood and qi. Nutrient-rich and non-drying, non-greasy, it is an excellent choice for strengthening the spleen and treating deficiency, especially suitable for elderly and children. Lotus seeds are neutral, sweet and astringent, benefiting the spleen, stopping diarrhea, tonifying the kidneys, consolidating essence, and calming the mind. *Compendium of Materia Medica* states they "govern heart and kidney, thicken intestines, solidify essence, strengthen tendons and bones, and nourish deficiency." Their gentle, slow action allows both tonification and astringency, addressing root and branch simultaneously. Water chestnuts are neutral, sweet and astringent, functioning to consolidate the kidneys, stop seminal emission, tonify the spleen, and stop diarrhea. *Essential Readings on Herbal Medicine* says: "Sweet taste nourishes the spleen, thus aiding dampness elimination; astringent taste consolidates the kidneys, thus sealing qi." Lean pork strengthens the spleen and stomach, acting as a medicinal guide. Ginger dispels cold and warms the stomach, also removing fishy odor. Together, lotus seeds and water chestnuts strongly nourish the spleen and kidneys, enhancing diarrhea control. Combined into a soup, they restore digestive function and stop diarrhea, enrich blood and qi, strengthen tendons and bones, and support growth.
[Cooking Method] First, lightly stir-fry dried sea worms over low heat until dry, cut open the worm bodies to remove sand sacs, soak in clean water to soften, then wash thoroughly. Soak water chestnuts and lotus seeds in clean water for 30 minutes after washing. Wash the lean pork, then place all ingredients, including ginger, into a clay pot. Add 2,500 ml (about 10 bowls) of water. Boil over high heat, then simmer over low heat for 2 hours. Season with appropriate salt and a little oil. This portion serves 2–3 people. The pork, sea worms, lotus seeds, and water chestnuts can also be removed and mixed with soy sauce as a side dish.
