Seasonal Dietary Therapy: Eliminating Foot Dampness During Spring Equinox
Three days from now marks the "Spring Equinox" among the twenty-four solar terms. The term "equinox" means half—indicating that half of the 90-day spring season has passed. The *Spring and Autumn Annals of Luxuriant Dew* states: "The Spring Equinox is when yin and yang are balanced, hence day and night are equal, and cold and heat are moderate." In southern regions, the area remains humid around the Spring Equinox due to geographical and climatic factors, making dampness elimination—especially for damp-footed foot ailments—particularly important. At the same time, rich, greasy soups are unsuitable during this period. Thus, we recommend:
Seaweed Lean Meat Soup
This soup, made from seaweed and lean pork, has a mild aroma and possesses functions of clearing heat, resolving phlegm, and softening hard masses. It is commonly used to treat foot diseases and damp-heat descending. It can also assist in treating thyroid enlargement and cervical lymph node tuberculosis.
〔Ingredients〕Dried seaweed 15g, lean pork 100g, a small amount of minced ginger.
Seaweed is highly nutritious marine vegetable, with the finest quality originating from areas like Shantou and Zhanjiang in Guangdong Province. It is cold in nature, sweet and salty in taste, and functions to resolve phlegm and soften hard masses. *Compendium of Materia Medica* notes: "Those suffering from goiter or foot disease should consume it." *Commentary on the Classic of Materia Medica* states it treats "goiter and nodular qi." *Modern Practical Herbal Medicine* records its use for "edema, urinary disorders, damp-footed foot disease, thyroid swelling, and chronic bronchitis cough." Lean pork is neutral in nature, sweet and salty in taste, with moistening and nourishing properties, serving here as a guiding herb.
〔Preparation〕First soak seaweed briefly in clean water; wash the lean pork, cut into slices. Add both with minced ginger to a pot, pour in 1000ml of water (~4 bowls), bring to a vigorous boil, then simmer gently for about half an hour. Add salt and a little cooking oil or sesame oil to taste. This serves two people. Drink the broth and eat the seaweed and pork slices. For auxiliary treatment of thyroid enlargement or cervical lymph node tuberculosis, consume 2–3 times weekly.
