Experts: Which Type of Ganoderma Is Best for Health?

🔑 Keywords: Pharmacological Diet
In recent years, many people have chosen Ganoderma to regulate their bodies and extend life, but there are numerous types of Ganoderma, leaving many elderly unsure which is best.
Worldwide, there are 104 species of Ganoderma, with China having 84. However, only about 10 are used medicinally. Ancient Chinese pharmacopeias like *Shen Nong Ben Cao Jing* classified Ganoderma by color into "Six Mushrooms" (also called "Five Mushrooms," excluding green mushroom): red (Dan Zhi), yellow (Jin Zhi), white (Yu Zhi), black (Xuan Zhi), purple (Mu Zhi), and green (Long Zhi). Yet, matching modern biological taxonomy to the "Six Mushrooms" is extremely difficult. Currently, only red and purple Ganoderma are clearly identified. These two are the most widely cultivated and used today. Common benefits of medicinal Ganoderma include tonifying deficiency, boosting qi, enhancing intelligence, and calming the spirit—reasons why it is considered a longevity-promoting and disease-resisting herb. Modern research confirms Ganoderma enhances immune function, exhibits anticancer and hepatoprotective effects, demonstrating its role in "supporting vital energy and replenishing deficiency."
Wild Ganoderma is extremely rare (wild does not necessarily mean better), so most medicinal Ganoderma today is artificially cultivated. The quality depends on strain quality, growing environment (temperature, humidity, light, ventilation), and harvesting time. If harvested beyond the optimal period, Ganoderma may become woody, reducing quality and efficacy.
Some believe gold and purple Ganoderma are the finest in the family. However, after reviewing relevant literature, no clear and reliable evidence supports this claim. For elderly seeking health maintenance, common red and purple Ganoderma are perfectly acceptable. Red Ganoderma features: kidney-shaped cap, semi-circular or nearly circular, surface brown-yellow or reddish-brown with a lacquer-like sheen, smooth stem matching or darker than cap. Purple Ganoderma features: brown to purplish-black cap, uniform brown to chestnut-colored flesh, spores larger than those of typical red Ganoderma. Overall, choose Ganoderma with large caps, long stems, firm texture, and glossy finish like lacquer. Avoid any with worm holes, decay, or hollow texture.
