Daily Orange Juice Consumption May Prevent Arthritis
British scientists have recently discovered that drinking a glass of orange juice daily may help prevent arthritis.
In the latest issue of the Journal of the American College of Nutrition, Dr. Alan Silman from Manchester University, UK, found that certain carotenoids present in daily fruits and vegetables can exert antioxidant effects in the human body, thereby reducing the likelihood of joint inflammation. Carotenoids are yellow to red pigments abundant in oranges and other fruits.
Dr. Silman’s research also revealed that not all carotenoids possess this effect. For example, lutein and lycopene—both belonging to the carotenoid family—show only moderate effectiveness in preventing arthritis.
