Eat More Radish, Eat Less Medicine

🔑 Keywords: Pharmacological Diet
It is commonly said: "Eat radish in winter, ginger in summer, no need to see the doctor." After the Autumnal Equinox, radish varieties become more diverse. Parents might consider buying some radishes for their children to eat.
According to Traditional Chinese Medicine, radish has functions of aiding digestion, resolving phlegm, relieving cough and asthma, clearing heat, regulating qi, reducing swelling, and dispersing stagnation. Most children experiencing colds often suffer from dry throat, sore throat, persistent cough, and difficulty expectorating phlegm—symptoms of upper respiratory infection. Eating more crisp, fresh, tender radishes not only stimulates appetite and aids digestion but also nourishes the throat, resolves phlegm, regulates qi, and effectively prevents colds.
Additionally, radishes are highly nutritious, rich in carbohydrates and various vitamins. Vitamin C content is 8–10 times higher than in pears. Radishes contain no oxalic acid, so they do not bind with calcium in food and actually enhance calcium absorption. Recent studies indicate that lignans in radishes have strong anticancer properties, with greater efficacy when eaten raw. Children dislike spicy flavors, so it's best to choose green-colored, juicy, mildly flavored, and sweet radishes. When preparing radishes for children, it's advisable to cut them vertically so that the head, waist, and tail parts are evenly distributed. As the saying goes: "The top of the radish is pungent, the bottom is dry, the middle part is just right." This is because different parts of the radish contain varying nutrient compositions. If children strongly dislike spiciness, peel the radish skin, slice or shred it, dip in sugar, or prepare it as vinegar-dipped radish or radish bone soup to make it more palatable.
