Leeks on the Table Are Like Viagra
Leeks have warming properties, regulate qi downward, nourish the kidneys, and invigorate yang, earning them the nickname "the yang-enhancing herb," truly a "Viagra among vegetables." Leaves, seeds, and roots of leeks are all used medicinally. They treat conditions such as erectile dysfunction, seminal emission, lumbar and knee pain, abdominal cold pain, gastric deficiency, and regurgitation.
Modern research shows leeks have high nutritional value, containing protein, fat, carbohydrates, crude fiber, calcium, phosphorus, beta-carotene, thiamine, riboflavin, ascorbic acid, and other nutrients. Leeks inhibit Pseudomonas aeruginosa, dysentery bacillus, typhoid bacillus, E. coli, and Staphylococcus aureus. The rich dietary fiber in leeks enhances intestinal motility, ensuring smooth bowel movements and playing a positive role in preventing colorectal cancer. Volatile compounds and sulfur-containing substances in leeks expand blood vessels and lower lipid levels.
Different parts of leeks serve distinct medicinal purposes. Leaves and roots have effects of dispersing stasis, activating blood, stopping bleeding and diarrhea, and assisting liver meridian flow, used for treating injuries, regurgitation, enteritis, hemoptysis, chest pain, etc. Leaves have stronger dispersing action; their juice is particularly effective for dispersing blood stasis. Roots have stronger descending action than leaves and are used to treat sweating. Leek seeds have effects of consolidating essence, enhancing yang, nourishing the kidneys, and warming the waist and knees, used for treating erectile dysfunction, seminal emission, and frequent urination.
