Traditional Chinese Medicine Treatment for Pruritus

Pruritus refers to a neurological disorder characterized clinically by itching without primary skin lesions. It commonly affects middle-aged and elderly individuals and is prevalent in both winter and summer. The area of itching varies—localized to one or two spots or widespread across the body. The intensity of itching fluctuates, appearing intermittently or continuously. In TCM, pruritus falls under the category of "wind-induced itch."
Itching is the main symptom, sometimes accompanied by sensations of needle pricks, burning, or crawling. In elderly patients, the trunk is typically the most affected area. Winter pruritus often occurs during sudden temperature changes in autumn and winter, frequently starting after a hot bath or removing clothes before sleep. Summer pruritus is often triggered by heat.
For general pruritus, combined Western and Chinese medicine treatments can quickly control and improve symptoms. Mild cases may be treated solely with internal herbal remedies and external washes. Severe or chronic cases require integrated treatment. If pruritus stems from internal medical conditions, it tends to recur and resist control, so underlying health issues must be addressed first.
In daily life, avoid seafood, spicy foods, onions, garlic, chives, and alcohol. Strengthen nutrition and engage in appropriate physical exercise to boost immune function. For elderly and winter-related pruritus, avoid hot baths and minimize use of detergents and soaps. Apply lanolin, baby oil, or moisturizer immediately after bathing.
Elderly pruritus is often due to blood deficiency or yin deficiency. If blood lipids are normal, moderate intake of high-fat foods may be beneficial. For summer pruritus, avoid grilled, fried, and spicy foods.
