Can TCM Effectively Treat Depression?
Q: I’m 50 years old and have a history of diabetes. Recently diagnosed with mild depression. What exactly is this condition? Can it be treated with TCM?
A: Depression is a psychological disorder, also known as mood disorder. Most current theories attribute its causes to social stress, personal trauma, negative personality traits, and genetic factors. Typical symptoms include low mood, reduced interest, lack of energy, anxiety, self-blame, memory decline, fatigue, insomnia, and even suicidal thoughts. Severity ranges from mild to severe. Mild depression has minimal impact on work and social interaction; moderate cases may lead to difficulty performing tasks; severe cases significantly impair daily functioning, even rendering basic self-care impossible. Patients suffering from chronic illnesses like diabetes, cancer, stroke, or heart disease often experience prolonged suffering and immense mental stress, which can trigger depression, worsening their original condition. Therefore, depression poses serious health risks.
From a TCM perspective, depression falls within categories such as depression, insomnia, palpitations, mania, and Bai He Bing (Lily Disease). It can be effectively managed through combined TCM and Western medicine approaches. Notably, when treating depression with TCM, the “dual disease treatment” method should be applied—this not only enhances therapeutic effectiveness but also mitigates side effects of Western medications.
