Xi’an TCM Shows Efficacy in Treating Avascular Necrosis of Femoral Head

The research team at Xi’an Orthopedic Hospital for Traditional Chinese Medicine, based on the TCM theory of "activating blood circulation to remove stasis and tonifying liver and kidney," conducted experimental studies that shortened the pathological process of avascular necrosis of the femoral head and significantly improved clinical cure rates.
This hospital specializes in treating various difficult bone diseases with pure herbal formulations. Under the leadership of President Guo Wanying and attending physician Ma Lingfeng, the research group has long focused on treating ischemic necrosis of the femoral head, ankylosing spondylitis, nonunion fractures, herniated lumbar discs, and other bone diseases, summarizing effective prescription methods. They prioritized studying TCM treatment for avascular necrosis of the femoral head, identifying blood stasis as the fundamental cause. The condition was classified into three types: qi stagnation and blood stasis, qi and blood deficiency, and liver-kidney deficiency. Treatment followed the TCM principle of "activating blood circulation to remove stasis and tonifying liver and kidney," resulting in the development of oral medicines such as "Bugu Wan" ("Bone Nourishing Pill"), "Tong sui Capsule," and external application preparations like "Shenxiao Powder." Over 2,600 cases were treated, revealing that the therapy shortens and improves the pathological process, with over 78% of patients experiencing complete relief of clinical symptoms. X-ray, CT, and MRI scans confirmed full recovery of the necrotic femoral head. The treatment also shows good efficacy for osteomyelitis, bone tuberculosis, spondylitis, nonunion fractures, rheumatoid arthritis, and lumbar spondylosis. The achievement has passed provincial appraisal and won the Second Prize for Scientific and Technological Progress in Xi’an City.
