Acne Location Indicates Different Diseases
Acne is a chronic inflammation of the sebaceous follicle, commonly known as “blackheads” or “pimples.” These bumps on smooth facial skin not only cause itching and pain locally but also somewhat diminish appearance. Moreover, acne is no longer exclusive to teenagers—many middle-aged individuals also suffer, indicating underlying health risks.
From a TCM perspective, acne in different facial locations reflects functional imbalances in different internal organs. The human body is an organic whole; internal pathological changes manifest externally in various ways. Different facial areas correspond closely to different organs; dysfunction in internal organs leads to acne in corresponding facial areas.
Long-term overthinking and mental strain often cause heart fire, leading to acne on the forehead—warning one to balance work and rest. Frequent consumption of spicy, greasy, or alcoholic foods leads to internal heat in the spleen and stomach, causing indigestion, dry mouth, bad breath, constipation, and acne on the nose—indicating a need to adjust dietary habits. Excessive stress without proper release leads to liver qi stagnation, manifesting as irritability, sudden mood swings, even rage over trivial matters, and acne on the cheeks—suggesting the need to relax and manage emotions. Some women experience recurring acne on the chin, especially prominent before menstruation—often linked to menstrual irregularity and premenstrual syndrome, requiring targeted treatment.
Additionally, if facial acne persists, besides checking for related organ dysfunction, one should consider whether cosmetics are improperly used. Long hair or oily hair gel causing forehead acne requires changing hairstyle or switching hair gel, or avoiding contact with the forehead. Inappropriate lotions or foundations, or heavy makeup, often clog pores and cause cheek acne—so minimize makeup frequency and choose suitable cosmetics. Residual fluoride toothpaste on lips after brushing can also stimulate skin and cause localized acne—be sure to rinse mouth thoroughly after brushing.
Besides location, acne color also reveals disease information: bright red acne indicates internal heat; darker-colored acne suggests liver stagnation, kidney deficiency, or blood stasis.
Regardless of where acne appears, one should regulate emotions and diet—often overlooked but frequently the trigger for acne onset and worsening. Also, maintain facial hygiene, avoid squeezing lesions to prevent infection and follicle blockage, worsening condition or leaving scars. Seek medical advice for severe cases.
