Folk Herbal Remedies for Fractures
Traditional Chinese medicine holds that “traumatic injuries result from stagnant blood not dispersing internally; if blood does not circulate, stagnation cannot be resolved, and bones cannot heal.” “Qi leads blood, and blood nourishes qi.” “Liver governs tendons and stores blood; Kidney governs bones and produces marrow; Spleen governs muscles and oversees transformation and transportation; Lung governs skin and hair and opens to all meridians.” Based on these theories, we use herbs that activate blood circulation, resolve stasis, connect tendons and bones, nourish the liver and kidneys, and tonify qi and blood. This effectively achieves the goals of removing stasis, filling bones, regenerating muscles, relaxing tendons, and harmonizing qi.
The main formula consists of Frankincense, Myrrh, ant eggs, Strychnos seed, Musk, crab bone, native copper, Bone-breaker, earthworm, and Borneol. Frankincense, pungent, bitter, and warm, and Myrrh, bitter and mild, both enter the Heart, Liver, and Spleen meridians, activating blood circulation, relieving pain, reducing swelling, and promoting tissue regeneration—these are the principal herbs. Earthworm and Strychnos seed disperse blood stasis, unblock meridians, and relieve pain—these are secondary herbs. Ant eggs and native copper tonify the liver and kidneys, connect tendons and bones—these are auxiliary herbs. Musk and Borneol, aromatic and penetrating, regulate qi and relieve pain, guiding the herbs to the site of illness—these are messenger herbs. The principal, secondary, auxiliary, and messenger herbs work together synergistically, providing good efficacy for various fractures.
External application formulas mainly consist of human urine residue, native copper, gallnut, frankincense, myrrh, etc., and can be used alone or combined with oral medications. They effectively resolve blood stasis, promote new tissue growth, reduce swelling, relieve pain, and connect broken bones.
Based on our clinical observations, early-stage fractures feature blood stasis, swelling, and severe pain; in the late stage, some patients develop soft tissue adhesions, joint stiffness, and limb numbness. According to these characteristics, we divide fracture treatment into three phases. In the early stage, we increase the dosage of Rhubarb, earthworm, Papaya, Dandelion, and Strychnos seed to stop bleeding, resolve stasis, reduce swelling, and relieve pain. In the middle stage, we focus on harmonizing the blood and generating new tissue, connecting tendons and bones. We may use the original formula, reducing or omitting herbs like Strychnos seed, Dragon’s Blood, and earthworm if there is no pain. In the late stage, since bones have already healed, treatment focuses on relaxing tendons, improving joint mobility, resolving stasis, dissolving nodules, strengthening tendons, and fortifying bones. Additional methods include fumigation and washing. Formula: Liu Jiniu, Da Ji, Xiao Ji, Qianghuo, Duhuo, Sangzhi, Chuanxiong, Da Huang, Honghua, Dibiechong, etc. Clinical use shows better efficacy.
