Re-examining Fangfeng Tongsheng Wan
Fangfeng Tongsheng Wan is an effective extraordinary formula formulated by Liu Hejian during the Jin-Yuan period, originally in powdered form, now commercially available as pills. This complex formula composed of 18 herbs—acting to induce sweating, resolve exterior patterns, clear heat, remove dampness, purge stagnation, and nourish blood—proves highly effective for various conditions caused by wind-heat accumulation, qi-blood stagnation, and both exterior and interior excess. It has been greatly praised by medical practitioners throughout history. In integrated Chinese-Western medicine research, its efficacy has been confirmed for several diseases.
Post-Cerebral Disease Frontal Headache Following epidemic meningitis, Japanese encephalitis, tuberculous meningitis, or cerebral thrombosis, acute brain symptoms usually subside after symptomatic treatment, but many patients are left with persistent pain in the forehead or specific areas of the head. When other treatments fail, this pill may be used: 6g per dose, three times daily. Improvement is typically evident within 3–4 days.
Multiple Furunculosis Clinically, Fangfeng Tongsheng Wan at 9g per dose, taken three times daily, is effective. For robust individuals or those with numerous boils, it may be changed to decoction: one dose daily, five-day course. After a five-day break, the next course begins. After 3–5 courses, recurrence of furunculosis can be controlled.
Chronic Cholecystitis Pain Chronic cholecystitis often flares acutely with severe pain, especially when gallstones are involved. In such cases, immediate administration of Fangfeng Tongsheng Wan at 15g is recommended, followed by two doses daily of 10g each. Relief often occurs after mild diarrhea appears. Additionally, chills, fever, chest tightness, and hiccups associated with cholecystitis also disappear. However, for suppurative biliary tract disease due to impacted gallstones, the pill is ineffective; a decoction should be tried instead.
