Winter Cold Period Is the Optimal Time for Kidney Nourishment
Before and after Winter Solstice, people commonly engage in tonification to accumulate nutrients and strengthen the body. Through practice, ancient health preservers have proven that winter, with its biting winds and snow-covered lands, is indeed the best season for preserving kidney energy.
In TCM, the kidney stores essence, governs growth, development, reproduction, and water metabolism, known as the "foundation of innate constitution." Kidney deficiency and essence depletion are key factors leading to organ dysfunction and disease. Thus, many health preservers regard kidney nourishment as a crucial measure for anti-aging and longevity.
Kidney nourishment can be approached through the following aspects:
Nourishing Essence and Preserving the Kidneys
The strength or weakness of kidney energy largely determines lifespan. The "Huangdi Neijing" states: "Essence is the root of life." The "Shou Shi Bao Yuan" says: "Essence is the master of the kidney. In winter, health preservation should involve moderate restraint in sexual activity, avoiding indulgence in desire and damaging kidney essence." These theories suggest that essence and qi are fundamental substances forming the human body, and their abundance or deficiency is decisive for longevity. Excessive loss of essence hinders one’s "natural destiny." Winter belongs to water, characterized by cold and storage. Thus, winter should prioritize nourishing essence and qi, practicing moderation in sexual activity to promote longevity.
Warm and Nutritious Porridge to Tonify Kidney Essence and Fill Marrow
Kidney essence relies on the nourishment of food and grain essence to continuously replenish and mature. During winter, lower temperatures make the kidney favor warmth; dietary regulation proves particularly effective for those with kidney deficiency. Various foods can supplement the kidney; common winter choices include walnuts, goji berries, dog meat, lamb, black sesame seeds, and longan flesh. Kidney deficiency falls into yin or yang deficiency categories; targeted dietary therapy yields better results. For kidney yang deficiency, opt for lamb porridge, deer kidney porridge, or scallion porridge to warm and invigorate the kidney; for kidney yin deficiency, choose sea cucumber porridge, rehmannia porridge, or goji berry porridge to nourish kidney essence.
Moderate Exercise to Strengthen the Kidneys and Body
Physical activities involving joints, tendons, and other tissues are governed by liver and kidney functions, hence the saying "liver and kidney share a common origin." Good health preservers emphasize physical exercise in winter to enhance tendon strength, bone health, unblock meridians, improve blood circulation, and boost immunity. Exercise intensity should be moderate—walking, jogging, fitness routines, or tai chi are excellent options. With persistence, one can achieve kidney strengthening and overall health.
