White-Collar Workers, Don’t Let Overtime Drag You Into the Abyss

News Agency Report: According to a recent survey by Japan’s Social Economic Production Mental Health Research Institute, individuals who work longer overtime hours show higher tendencies toward suicide.
As reported by Asahi Shimbun, between September 2003 and March 2005, the institute conducted a questionnaire survey among 10,738 employees (average age 37.5 years) across 15 companies, categorizing monthly overtime into three groups: under 60 hours, 60–80 hours, and over 80 hours.
The results showed that among those working less than 60 hours per month, 3.6% to 4.7% often thought about suicide. Among those working 60–80 hours, the rate jumped to 6%, and among those exceeding 80 hours, it reached 7.1%.

The survey also indicated that although people working under 60 hours monthly have relatively lower suicide risk, their large population size means their mental health issues cannot be ignored.
