Master Sun Simiao’s Health Preservation Methods
Master Sun Simiao was born during the Western Wei Dynasty and is traditionally believed to have lived to 141 years before passing away. His longevity secrets must have been exceptional. In fact, Sun Simiao was frail and sickly in childhood, which led him to study medicine due to illness. He compiled two monumental medical works—The Thousand Gold Prescriptions and The Supplement to the Thousand Gold Prescriptions—based on clinical experience and medical theories from before the Tang Dynasty. His health preservation methods may greatly benefit you.
Brush Hair Often
Interlock palms and rub 36 times until palms warm. Then sweep from the forehead upward across the back of the head to the neck. Perform this 10 times each morning and evening. The head contains many important acupoints; regularly "brushing hair" helps prevent headaches, tinnitus, gray hair, and hair loss.
Move Eyes Often
Close eyes, then forcefully open them while rotating the eyeballs clockwise to look left, up, right, down. Close eyes again, open forcefully, rotate eyes counterclockwise to look right, up, left, down. Repeat 3 times. This practice supports eye health and helps correct myopia.
Tap Teeth Often
Keep mouth slightly closed, gently tap upper and lower teeth together without excessive force, ensuring audible sound. Perform 36 times. This stimulates meridians of the jaw, maintains mental clarity, enhances digestion, and prevents tooth decay and jawbone degeneration.
Rinse Jade Saliva
Close mouth slightly, extend tongue out past teeth. Starting from the top, slowly rotate leftward for 12 circles, then swallow saliva. Repeat 12 circles in reverse direction. From a modern scientific perspective, saliva contains abundant enzymes that regulate hormone secretion, thus strengthening the gastrointestinal system.
Drum Ears Often
Cover both ears with palms, press inward firmly, then release with a “puff” sound. Repeat 10 times. Then cover ears with hands, fold ears backward, use index fingers to strike the Fengchi point at the back of the head 10 times. Perform this before sleeping and upon waking daily to enhance memory and hearing.
Sway Waist Often
Swing body and arms rhythmically. When turning left, place right hand forward and left hand behind; lightly pat the lower abdomen with the front right hand and the "Mingmen" acupoint with the rear left hand. Repeat in the opposite direction. Perform at least 50 times, ideally 100. This strengthens the gastrointestinal tract, consolidates kidney energy, prevents indigestion, stomach pain, and back pain.
Rub Abdomen Often
Rub hands 36 times until warm, then cross hands and rub around the navel clockwise, gradually expanding the rubbing area. Perform 36 times. This aids digestion, absorption, and relieves abdominal bloating.
Contract the Anal Sphincter (Kegel Exercise)
Inhale, tighten anal muscles. Hold breath briefly, until discomfort arises, then exhale and relax. Can be practiced anytime. Best done 20–30 times morning and evening. This exercise was reportedly the favorite health regimen of Emperor Qianlong, known as the "Perfect Elder."
Twist Knees Often
Stand feet together, knees tightly pressed. Slightly squat, hands on knees, twist left and right, 20 times each side. This strengthens knee joints. As the saying goes, "Old age starts with weak legs, kidney deficiency leads to soft knees"—to prolong life, start with the legs.
Massage Feet Often
Use right hand to rub left foot, left hand to rub right foot. From heel to toe and back to heel counts as one stroke; repeat 36 times. Then alternately rub the Yongquan acupoint on the soles with thumbs, 100 times total. The soles contain reflex zones for all organs; regular foot massage strengthens organs, treats insomnia, lowers blood pressure, and relieves headaches.
