TCM Strategies to Subdue Summer Heat

Are you experiencing frequent health warnings in summer—rising blood pressure, rapid breathing? Perhaps you haven’t mastered seasonal health strategies.
Yoga Therapy: Though seemingly simple stretching, yoga fully relaxes body and mind, providing mental space to alleviate restlessness caused by excessive heat.
Technique: Adopt lotus position (or stand upright, hands clasped behind back), close eyes, focus mind, breathe slowly and deeply. Count from 1 to 5 during inhalation, then exhale slowly—repeat at least three times.
Benefits: “When anxious, take deep breaths”—a familiar adage, but highly effective. Anxiety causes shallow breathing, hindering oxygen flow, worsening unease. Deep breathing improves oxygen circulation.
Hypnotherapy: Allows full physical and mental relaxation, helping access subconscious mind to trace the root of anxiety.
Technique: Close eyes and recall a time in life when you felt confident.
Benefits: Summer anxiety is worse than in other seasons. This therapy builds confidence, helping escape daily tension.
Eat Some “Bitter”: Nutritionists suggest eating more bitter foods in summer—bitter tastes are enemies of heat.
Best choice: Bitter melon. Can be eaten raw, stir-fried, or in soup. Stir-fry until green but cooked through. Or simply wash, sprinkle salt and sesame oil, and enjoy raw—preserving nutrients. Cut into slices for tea or juice—raw bitter melon juice allows rapid absorption of active compounds. To reduce bitterness, soak in salt water beforehand—removes some bitterness and oxalic acid, avoiding interference with calcium absorption.
Other bitter foods worth recommending: almonds, bitter lettuce, bitter tea, celery, buckwheat, mustard greens, and evening primrose. Fresh celery leaves boiled in water or blanched then juiced offer similar heat-relieving effects. Besides bitter foods, summer offers abundant fruits and vegetables—eat more sweet, refreshing fresh produce. Experts note that kale, cauliflower, watermelon, hawthorn, apples, and grapes are rich in minerals, especially calcium, magnesium, and silicon—possessing calming and heat-reducing powers. Thus, consume these regularly in summer.
Aromatherapy: 1. Lavender: Heat calms before lavender’s soothing presence. Lavender reduces inflammation, lowers heat, and eases mental tension. Plant lavender in your yard, add 8 spoonfuls of lavender essential oil to bathwater, or place a few spoonfuls in your pillow—feel the gentle sea breeze all summer, instantly banishing anxiety.
2. Aromatic Massage: If heat causes anxiety and headaches, aromatherapy massage helps. Essential oils from lemon verbena, chamomile, lavender, frankincense, bitter orange blossom, geranium, and sandalwood all relieve mental tension and anxiety. Mix these oils into massage oil and apply to body—gradually relaxing the mind.
