Fighting Acne with Traditional Chinese Medicine

Beautiful spring brings joy—but how can we let "acne" ruin our happy mood? Previously, our newspaper introduced Olympic champion Liu Xiang’s successful use of the "cold spray method" for treating acne. However, experts point out that the cold spray method isn’t suitable for everyone with acne. Treating acne requires targeted therapy. Today, we present TCM approaches to acne treatment, hoping to free girls from heavy makeup hiding tiny bumps, allowing them to smile freely in spring.
"I used to feel confident, but now I feel inferior every time I look in the mirror," said Yang Yang, who has suffered from acne for over a year. "This time, I hope TCM treatment will completely clear my face."
Dr. Li Qingping from the TCM Beauty Center diagnosed Yang Yang and concluded that insufficient sleep and hormonal imbalance led to her acne. She recommended regulating the liver and gallbladder. The doctor devised a combined treatment plan involving acupuncture, cupping, and ear acupressure. Acupuncture stimulates specific points to boost metabolism and expel toxins. Cupping and ear acupressure complement acupuncture to regulate the body’s overall function.
Preventing acne should start with proper facial cleansing. People prone to acne should pay attention to three points when washing their face:
1. Use sulfur soap or acne-fighting facial cleanser;
2. Lather soap or cleanser in the palm first, then evenly apply to the face;
3. Always use warm water cooled after boiling.
Three Principles for Fighting Acne
1. If you already have many acne spots, keep the area clean. Some women hide them under heavy makeup, which harms recovery.
2. Never squeeze, press, or rub blackheads or pimples—this risks infection, pus formation, and may leave pigment spots or indentations.
3. Some beauty salons offer pimple extraction services, but only suitable for blackheads or milia. Inflammatory acne should not be extracted, as it causes skin breaks, inviting bacteria.
