Consuming Starchy Foods to Suppress Colon Cancer
British nutritionists analyzed dietary habits and cancer incidence across ten countries. Results showed that higher consumption of starchy foods correlates with lower rates of small intestine, colon, and rectal cancers. Researchers believe starchy foods suppress colon cancer through two mechanisms: first, when starch enters the intestines, a series of reactions increase fecal bulk, promote colonic excretion, and accelerate the removal of carcinogenic metabolic byproducts; second, starch ferments in the gut to produce large amounts of butyrate, which inhibits potentially carcinogenic cells in the colon lining. Experiments have confirmed butyrate is an effective inhibitor of cancer cell growth. Experts advise: never forget to eat starchy foods at each meal.
