Who Should Limit Beer Consumption?
Beer is a common beverage, but certain individuals should drink less or avoid it entirely for health reasons.
Patients with Gastritis: Medical studies show that drinking large amounts of beer can trigger gastritis. For those already suffering from gastritis, drinking beer worsens symptoms. Beer reduces secretion of prostaglandin E, which protects the gastric mucosa, thus aggravating gastritis.
Liver Disease Patients: Alcohol in beer is absorbed through the gastrointestinal tract and metabolized by organs including the liver, ultimately breaking down mostly into carbon dioxide and water. Individuals with acute or chronic liver disease have impaired liver function and cannot detoxify efficiently, making them more prone to alcohol poisoning. Moreover, alcohol directly damages liver cells, worsening existing conditions.
Gout Patients: Gout results from abnormal purine metabolism, causing increased uric acid—the end product of purine and nucleic acid breakdown—leading to hyperuricemia. Beer contains abundant purines and nucleic acids; drinking it increases blood uric acid levels, triggering gout attacks.
Diabetes Patients: Although beer has low alcohol content, the calories produced by alcohol interfere with normal dietary control. When diabetic patients take sulfonylurea hypoglycemic drugs or inject insulin, excessive beer consumption may lead to hypoglycemic reactions.
Heart Disease Patients: Beer contains large amounts of water, increasing cardiac workload after consumption. Regular heavy drinking causes continuous alcohol damage to the heart, leading to cardiac hypertrophy and potential heart failure. Those already showing signs of heart failure should avoid beer completely.
Urinary Stone Patients: The malt extract used in brewing beer contains major components of urinary stones. Therefore, anyone with urinary tract stones should refrain from drinking beer.
Ulcer Patients: Beer contains substantial carbon dioxide. Drinking small amounts is harmless, but excessive intake increases gastric pressure, posing a risk of ulcer perforation.
Additionally, children should avoid beer entirely, and the elderly should drink sparingly. Beer can also interfere with drug metabolism and absorption in the body, reducing drug efficacy. Therefore, avoid drinking beer during medication, and never use beer to swallow pills.
