Japanese Scholars: Beer Has Anti-Cancer Effects
A scholar from Okayama University in Japan discovered that beer contains multiple components with anti-cancer properties.
Associate Professor Saho Arata of Okayama University exposed carcinogenic methylating agents to Salmonella bacterial genes. Under normal conditions, the bacteria’s genes would suddenly mutate—the initial stage of cancerogenesis. Then, various components extracted from freeze-dried beer were reacted with these genes. The results showed that at least six components in beer could inhibit sudden gene mutations. Analysis revealed one component was a nucleic acid compound, located in ribonucleic acid (RNA) within cells.
