Eating Fish and Tofu Together Is the Best for Calcium Supplementation

Fish and tofu are both popular foods in daily diets. Research shows that eating them together not only provides nutritional complementarity but also has certain preventive and therapeutic effects.
From a nutritional standpoint, fish and tofu each have unique characteristics: fish is a "nutrient-dense" food with a protein content as high as 17.3%, and rich in phosphorus, calcium, iron, fat, and vitamin D. Tofu, as a food with medicinal properties, offers multiple benefits such as invigorating qi and nourishing deficiency, and contains a high amount of calcium. Studies prove that the calcium content in 100 grams of tofu ranges from 140 to 160 milligrams.
Why should they be eaten together? First, the proteins in both fish and tofu are incomplete. Tofu lacks methionine and lysine, which are abundant in fish meat; meanwhile, fish meat has low phenylalanine content, whereas tofu has higher levels. Combining them allows for mutual supplementation.
Second, eating fish and tofu together significantly enhances the body’s absorption of calcium from tofu. Although tofu contains abundant calcium, it is poorly absorbed when consumed alone. The rich vitamin D in fish has biological activity and can increase calcium absorption by over 20 times. Children prone to rickets and women and elderly people susceptible to osteoporosis benefit greatly from consuming fish and tofu.
Additionally, fish meat contains abundant unsaturated fatty acids, while tofu protein contains large amounts of soy isoflavones—both help lower cholesterol. Eating them together is beneficial for preventing coronary heart disease and cerebral infarction.
Tofu and fish can be paired in many ways. One common dish is fish head tofu soup, which is easy to prepare: first pan-fry the fish head, then add water and tofu to stew together. When cooked, the broth turns milky white, resembling fresh milk; the tofu is tender and not greasy. For women, choosing carp with tofu can promote beauty; for braised dishes, use crucian carp.
