Becoming a Health-Conscious Vegetarian Beauty

Maybe you’ve noticed that vegetarianism, once reserved for monks and nuns, has evolved into a global fashion trend and a new lifestyle emphasizing health. In major cities, more and more people are embracing plant-based diets—eating more vegetables and fruits, less meat. A “vegetarian wave” is sweeping across society. Some adopt vegetarianism to follow international trends; others believe it is the healthiest lifestyle, offering nutritional advantages difficult to match with meat; some choose it out of concern for animals and environmental protection.
Statistics show that most vegetarians in China today are fashionable, culturally refined, and economically well-off professional women. They generally understand health preservation principles. Their choice of vegetarianism is usually unrelated to faith. Instead, they focus on how vegetarianism affects beauty, weight loss, body shape, and overall health—hoping it helps them maintain an attractive figure and perfect appearance in work or social settings.
What Makes Someone a Vegetarian?
There are generally four types of vegetarians:
1. Strict Vegetarians: Consume only plant-based foods. Most common in Western countries, including onions and garlic.
2. Ovo-Vegetarians: Include plants and eggs but exclude dairy. Common in Eastern countries like China and Japan, typically avoiding onions, garlic, and other pungent foods.
3. Lacto-Ovo Vegetarians: Include plants, eggs, and dairy. Similar to ovo-vegetarians, usually avoid pungent foods.
4. Lacto-Vegetarians: Include plants and dairy. Common in South Asian countries like India, typically avoiding eggs and alcohol but accepting onions and garlic.
In recent years, Hong Kong has seen a new group of vegetarians motivated by health concerns—many favor organic foods and natural supplements, rejecting foods containing preservatives, genetically modified ingredients, artificial colors, or MSG.

Pyramid-Based Vegetarian Diet
In November 1997, Professor Cornell University’s Clifton presented the “Pyramid Vegetarian Diet” at an international conference. This balanced vegetarian diet helps reduce the risk of many diseases, including cancer, heart disease, obesity, osteoporosis, and chronic degenerative conditions.
The pyramid emphasizes eating a variety of base foods at every meal—the bottom layer includes fruits, vegetables, grains, oats, wheat, whole wheat bread, barley, noodles, flour-based foods, and corn. The middle layer—also eaten daily—includes nuts, seeds, proteins, dairy products, soy cheese, milk, and plant oils. The top tip consists of optional foods, consumed occasionally in small amounts, such as eggs and desserts.
Alongside following this diet, one should engage in moderate daily exercise and drink plenty of water.
