Moderation in Desires, Guarding the Spirit

Moderation in Desires, Guarding the Spirit
Desire refers to cravings for material pleasures and spiritual fulfillment. Moderation means restraining excessive pursuit in either area, preventing the body from being drained by overwhelming desires. How should one properly manage and resolve desires? *Baopuzi: Inner Chapters* states: “Desires cannot be entirely suppressed. Without sexual union, stagnation occurs, leading to illness. Thus, isolation and loneliness bring disease and short life. Yet unrestrained indulgence also shortens lifespan. Only through balanced expression can one avoid harm.” Excessive greed in life, never satisfied, causes mental exhaustion and damages psychological health. Sexual desire is a biological instinct. Normal sexual activity harms no one—it regulates emotions, brings happiness, boosts motivation, and supports overall well-being, especially mental health. But without restraint, excessive indulgence drains essence and blood, empties the brain, deprives the spirit of nourishment, and harms health. Ancient physicians believed moderation in desire and preservation of essence is fundamental to longevity. *Huangdi Neijing: Jin Kui Zhen Yan Lun* says: “Essence is the root of life.” Essence forms the basis for growth, development, and reproduction. Excessive loss of essence impairs physical development. Zhang Jingyue stated: “Those who master health preservation must safeguard their essence. When essence is abundant, qi is strong; when qi is strong, spirit is complete; when spirit is complete, the body is healthy; when the body is healthy, illness is rare. Strong spirit and robust constitution in old age stem entirely from essence.” Guangchengzi said: “Be still and pure. Do not exhaust your body, do not disturb your essence—thus you may live long.” *Huangdi Neijing: Shang Gu Zhen Tian Lun* warns: “Today’s people do not follow this path—they treat wine as drink, indulge recklessly, become drunk before sex, exhaust their essence, dissipate their true nature, fail to maintain balance, and neglect mental discipline… hence they decline by fifty.” Some ancients even advocated delaying marriage in youth, moderating desires in prime years, and abstaining completely in old age. Early marriage and excessive indulgence drain essence completely—no elixirs can save such people. Human essence is limited, hard to replenish, easy to deplete—like oil in a lamp: full oil means bright flame; empty oil means extinguished light. Indulging in excess, relying on drugs to compensate, destroys the body—the most foolish act.
Appropriate moderation is not forced suppression. Forced restraint harms both body and mind.
Natural restraint is beneficial; forced control is harmful. Overuse leads to depletion; letting nature take its course without force is best. The key lies in mental hygiene: remain unmoved by external temptations, undisturbed by inner fire. Then essence naturally remains still. If the mind is not cultivated, it will deteriorate morally. Ancients also warned: without quieting the mind, inner fire stirs, passion flares uncontrollably, disturbs the essence reservoir, causing spontaneous emission—even without intentional indulgence, essence and spirit are damaged. Thus, only through moderation in desires and guarding of the spirit can essence and spirit flourish, achieving disease prevention, longevity, and robust health.
