Gaining Spirit vs. Losing Spirit

Gaining Spirit vs. Losing Spirit
The *Huangdi Neijing* says: "He who gains spirit thrives; he who loses spirit perishes." "Thriving" means abundant vitality; "perishing" means death. The key distinction lies in whether one possesses spirit or lacks it.
What constitutes "having spirit" or "lacking spirit" primarily manifests in mental condition, clarity of consciousness, coordination and agility of movements, and responsiveness. Since the eyes are where the essence and energy of the five zang and six fu organs converge, and since "spirit resides in the heart and reveals itself through the eyes," observing changes in eye appearance is a crucial sign for determining whether one has spirit or not.
If the eyes are bright, lively, sharp in perception, and speech is clear, this is considered gaining spirit. Conversely, dull eyes, fixed pupils, lethargy, and sluggish response indicate losing spirit—signifying injury to vital energy, serious illness, and poor prognosis. In modern scientific terms, gaining spirit means good mental health; losing spirit means poor mental health or unhygienic mental state. Key standards for mental hygiene include:
First, normal intellectual development, as it is the fundamental psychological prerequisite for daily living, learning, and work; intellectual disability remains the most common psychological defect in humans.
Second, emotional stability and a cheerful mood. Emotional stability indicates relative balance in central nervous system activity; a cheerful mood reflects harmony and satisfaction in physical and mental functioning.
Third, establishing good interpersonal relationships. Humans exist within complex social divisions and shared environments, naturally involving relationships with others. Building positive relationships helps eliminate loneliness.
Fourth, enhancing self and adapting to the external environment to meet survival needs. Adaptation involves an individual adjusting to the surrounding environment—either modifying the environment to suit oneself or transforming oneself to fit environmental demands. Mental health requires harmony and unity between the self and objective reality. When facing various life challenges, one should adopt a healthy mindset, confront reality calmly, and handle issues positively and prudently.
Fifth, actively participating in labor and exercise. Labor enables individuals to recognize their own value and the meaning of life.
