How to Consolidate Essence and Strengthen the Kidneys
Consolidating essence and strengthening the kidneys is a hallmark of traditional Chinese room and chamber health preservation, representing a primary method for nurturing essence. Here, "essence" refers not only to reproductive essence but also to the essence of the five zang and six fu organs.
Various methods exist for consolidating essence in room and chamber practices. Works such as "Qianjin Yaofang" and "Yixin Fang" advocate the principle of "more effort, less emission." During intercourse, both partners should prolong duration, frequently stimulate the genital organs, and strive to avoid premature orgasm or ejaculation. Ancient medical texts suggest that if the penis moves inside the vagina ten times without ejaculating, it enhances hearing and vision; twenty times improves voice clarity; thirty times promotes skin luster; forty times strengthens spine and flanks; fifty times thickens buttocks and thighs; sixty times ensures smooth fluid metabolism; seventy times boosts reproductive function and firm erections; eighty times tightens the skin and enhances defensive qi; ninety times energizes the spirit and sharpens thinking; one hundred times ensures longevity and a long life.
The "Dongxuanshi" and other texts describe techniques to extend intercourse duration and delay ejaculation. It advises that when a man feels the urge to ejaculate, he should withdraw the penis slightly (about one-third out of the vagina), pause movement, close his eyes, focus inward, touch the tip of his tongue to the upper palate, raise his spine, lift his head, expand his nostrils, draw shoulders inward, and take deep breaths through the mouth. Once the ejaculation sensation fades, resume motion. Repeating this process extends intercourse time. The "Yufang Zhiyao" recommends that upon approaching climax, immediately tilt the head upward, widen the eyes, look around in all directions, and withdraw the penis from the vagina while taking deep breaths to control ejaculation. Another method involves pressing the perineum (located behind the scrotum and in front of the anus) with the index and middle fingers of the left hand during ejaculation sensation, combined with deep breathing and clenching teeth together, temporarily softening the penis. At this point, resuming motion delays ejaculation. These methods essentially combine physical movements, breathing techniques, and mental focus to delay orgasm and control ejaculation. They prove effective in treating premature ejaculation.
Ming dynasty physician Yue Fujia stated: "Today’s health practitioners often speak of 'harvesting female essence to supplement male yang' and 'long battles without emission,' which is a great misconception. The kidneys house essence; every sexual encounter disturbs the kidneys. Once the kidneys are agitated, essence flows along with it. Even if no external emission occurs, essence has already departed its residence. Even those who can endure will inevitably lose several drops of true essence as yang weakens and slips away—this is evident." He outlined five methods to nurture essence: first, moderate sexual desire to conserve blood and essence; second, avoid overwork, as fatigue easily depletes essence and blood; third, regulate emotions, avoid extremes of joy or anger, maintain mental tranquility to prevent disrupted qi flow and hidden depletion of essence; fourth, abstain from alcohol; excessive drinking damages health, as alcohol is pungent and sweet, where pungency increases heat and sweetness accumulates dampness—damp-heat accumulation harms qi and blood; fifth, regulate diet—avoid greasy, fried, rich foods; prefer light, fresh, nutritious, and flavorful meals.
Thus, moderating sexual desire, balancing work and rest, regulating emotions, and adjusting diet form the foundation of consolidating essence and strengthening the kidneys. Combined with herbal medicine, acupuncture, qigong, massage, and other health-preserving practices, these methods enhance efficacy.
