The Origin of Yoga

Yoga originated in ancient India and has spread worldwide. The word “yoga” originally meant taming horses or oxen. From ancient times, it also referred to certain practices or disciplines aimed at achieving ultimate goals. In the *Yoga Sutras* by the sage Patanjali, yoga is precisely defined as “the restraint of mental fluctuations.” Yoga has a long history in India. It is closely related to the ancient Vedic system of Brahmanism. In India, people believe that through yoga one can transcend the suffering of samsara (cyclic existence), uniting the individual self with the universal Self. Through yoga, the seeds of rebirth are burned away, the essence of mind is realized, and all obstacles vanish. Today, it is difficult to distinguish yoga from Hinduism in India—both are deeply interwoven in temples, scriptures, daily life, and countless aspects. Yoga is one of the oldest physical wellness systems in the East. It emerged before the common era, representing the crystallization of human wisdom. Yoga is also the intuitive insight into life gained by Indian sages in profound contemplation and meditative stillness. The practice of yoga is a scripture combining theory and practice.
Legend holds that on the sacred mountain of Mother Peak, reaching 8,000 meters, individuals attained enlightenment and became ascetics, passing their secret teachings to those sincerely seeking, thus preserving the tradition to this day.
Initially, only a few practitioners followed yoga, usually in monasteries, rural huts, Himalayan caves, or dense forests, where teachers passed knowledge to willing disciples. Later, yoga gradually spread among ordinary Indians.
Today, yoga is a scientific system of bodily cultivation refined over thousands of years by Indian people through practical experience—not merely a secret reserved for a few hermits. Currently, yoga has spread globally. India hosts numerous specialized schools dedicated to yoga studies. Yoga features a comprehensive system of practice, covering both physical and spiritual dimensions. Modern yoga extends beyond philosophy and religion—it carries broad significance and enduring vitality.
When a yoga practitioner enters the deepest level of meditation, they awaken to the true nature of life and the highest good, achieving union between individual consciousness and cosmic consciousness, awakening dormant inner energy, attaining supreme enlightenment and maximum joy.
