Health Preservation: Men Should Not Go Without Ginger for 100 Days

According to traditional Chinese theory, ginger is a yang-nourishing substance. Ancient wisdom holds: "A man should not go 100 days without ginger." In "Dong Po Za Ji," Song Dynasty poet Su Shi recorded that an 80-year-old monk from Jingci Temple in Hangzhou had a youthful complexion, claiming he had consumed ginger for 40 years, hence remaining young. Legend says Bai Niangzi stole immortal grass to save Xu Xian—this immortal grass was actually ginger sprout. Ginger is also known as "Return-to-Life Grass," and ginger soup as "Return-to-Life Soup." Ginger contains volatile compounds like shogaol and gingerol, offering functions such as promoting blood circulation, dispelling cold, removing dampness, inducing sweating, and additionally, aiding digestion, stopping nausea, eliminating odors, and reducing swelling. Hence, doctors and folk sayings claim: "Keep a little ginger at home—small illnesses need not panic," and "Eat radish in winter, ginger in summer—no need for doctors’ prescriptions."
A patient undergoing surgery discovered widespread lymphatic metastasis and chemotherapy-induced severe nausea, losing 2–3 kilograms per cycle, severely damaging health.
Through clinical nutritional support and dietary adjustment, patients were not forced to eat before morning chemotherapy. Instead, they were given a thin slice of fresh ginger to hold in the mouth, leveraging ginger’s anti-nausea and warming properties. In the afternoon, when chemotherapy toxicity peaked, they ate small portions multiple times to ensure sufficient caloric and nutritional intake. Over a year-long treatment, the patient not only maintained weight but gained 10 kilograms. Enhanced immunity extended life by five more years—ginger played a pivotal role.
Caution: Spoiled ginger contains toxic compound safrole, harmful to the liver. Never consume ginger if it shows signs of spoilage.
