Health Preservation: Placing Citrus Fruits by the Bed Promotes Better Sleep
Many people enjoy placing fruit-scented air fresheners in their cars to refresh themselves when drowsy. Could placing a citrus fruit in the bedroom have a similar effect? “Citrus fruits emit aromatic odors that can open the orifices and dispel impurities,” explains Professor Chang Zhangfu of Beijing University of Chinese Medicine. He notes that Zhuge Liang, during his campaign to subdue Meng Huo, carried dried tangerine peel and mint into southern regions plagued by miasma, toxic waters, poisonous lakes, and high humidity to eliminate dampness and purify the air.
In winter, indoor air circulation is poor and pathogens are more prevalent. Placing an orange in the bedroom releases a refreshing scent that stimulates the nervous system, clears the mind, removes stale air, and improves room ambiance. From a TCM perspective, citrus fragrance can transform dampness, invigorate the spleen, ward off pollution, and open the orifices. Besides enhancing mental clarity, smelling citrus can relieve fatigue, bloating, and loss of appetite. The aromatic scent also calms the spirit and promotes sleep. Placing an orange by the bedside thus aids sleep. Additionally, the gentle color of oranges gives a warm feeling, making them ideal decorative elements indoors during winter.
