Eleven Simple Radish-Based Therapeutic Recipes
During the Spring Festival, everyone likely indulged in rich foods, leaving the body full of greasy residues. Post-holiday, let’s prepare some radish dishes to aid digestion, moisturize the intestines, cleanse the gastrointestinal tract, and even prevent or treat other ailments.
1. Chinese Cabbage and Radish Soup
[Composition] 250g cabbage hearts, 100g white radish
[Preparation] Boil in water, add red sugar as needed. Eat the vegetables and drink the soup.
[Function] Treats acute rhinitis of wind-heat type: alternating nasal congestion, nasal itching, sneezing, yellow thick mucus, fever, aversion to wind, headache, sore throat, cough, difficult expectoration, thirst, red tongue, slightly yellow coating, rapid pulse.
2. Radish and Tofu Stew
[Composition] 1 cup fresh radish juice, 100g maltose, 500g tofu
[Preparation] Mix all three ingredients, boil until ready. Consume one dose daily, divided into two servings.
[Function] Moistens lungs, clears heat, transforms phlegm, calms asthma. Effective for heat-induced asthma.
3. Radish Stewed with Pig Lung
[Composition] 500–1,000g fresh radish, 1 pig lung
[Preparation] Wash radish and cut into chunks. Wash pig lung thoroughly and cut into pieces. Stew until tender, season and serve.
[Function] Nourishes lungs, descends rebellious qi, transforms phlegm. Treats deficiency-type asthma.
4. Radish Juice with Honey
[Composition] 300ml white radish juice, 30g honey
[Preparation] Mix evenly and store. Take 100ml with warm water, three times daily.
[Function] Moistens lungs, tonifies the center, lubricates intestines, transforms phlegm, stops cough, calms asthma. Useful as adjunctive treatment for asthma.
5. Kelp and Radish Soup
[Composition] 30g kelp, 250g white radish
[Preparation] Wash kelp and cut into diamond shapes. Wash radish, keep skin and roots, cut into thin strips. Combine in a clay pot, add water, boil, then simmer until radish is soft. Season appropriately, add a few drops of sesame oil.
[Dietary method] Eat freely and drink the soup.
[Function] Softens hardness, disperses nodules, prevents and combats cancer. Widely applicable for prevention and treatment of breast cancer at all stages.
6. Braised Radish with Kelp:
[Composition] Appropriate amounts of kelp and radish, cloves, star anise, cinnamon bark, Sichuan pepper, walnut kernels, vegetable oil, soy sauce
[Preparation] Soak kelp in water for 24 hours (change water twice). Wash and cut into strands. Cut radish into coarse strips. Heat oil, stir-fry kelp briefly, add cloves, star anise, cinnamon bark, Sichuan pepper, walnut kernels, soy sauce, and water. Bring to boil, then simmer until kelp is nearly tender. Add radish and braise until cooked.
[Function] Diuretic, eliminates gas, aids weight loss.
7. Radish Pancake
[Composition] 150g white radish, 150g flour, 60g lean pork, ginger, scallion oil, salt, and other seasonings as needed
[Preparation] Wash and shred radish. Stir-fry in bean oil until half-cooked. Chop pork finely, mix with radish to form filling. Make dough from flour and water, divide into portions, flatten into rounds, fill with radish mixture, shape into stuffed pancakes, and pan-fry until golden.
[Dietary method] Eat as a snack.
[Function] Strengthens stomach, regulates qi, aids digestion.
[Indicated for] Loss of appetite, indigestion, cough with phlegm, etc. Especially suitable for children.
8. Clear-Stewed Beef and Radish Soup
[Ingredients] 2,000g beef (lean and fatty), 1,000g white radish, 2 green onions, salt, yellow wine as needed
[Preparation] Wash beef, drain, cut into large pieces. Wash radish, peel, wash again, cut into dice. Heat oil in a wok, add 2 spoons of plant oil. Heat oil over high flame, add beef, stir-fry for 5 minutes, add 4 spoons of yellow wine, then stew for 10 minutes until fragrant. Transfer to a large clay pot, add enough cold water to submerge beef. Boil over high heat, add 2 green onions and 1 spoon of yellow wine, then reduce heat and simmer slowly for about 3 hours until beef tendons are soft and easily chewable. Add radish, 1 spoon of salt (use sparingly), and continue slow cooking for 1 hour until both beef and radish are tender. Remove from heat.
[Dietary method] Consume on an empty stomach before meals or with meals. When serving, remove the surface layer of floating fat.
[Function] Yellow beef nourishes the spleen and stomach; white radish promotes diuresis. With nourished spleen and stomach, digestion and transportation improve, and bloating gradually subsides. Ideal for early-stage ascites due to liver cirrhosis, spleen-stomach deficiency, and abdominal distension.
9. Radish Porridge
[Composition] 5 large radishes, 50g glutinous rice
[Preparation] Boil radishes until soft, extract juice, mix with glutinous rice to cook porridge.
[Dietary method] Consume warm twice daily, morning and evening.
[Function] Clears heat, lowers qi, quenches thirst, stops cough, transforms phlegm. Aids digestion, relieves drunkenness, promotes urination. Reduces stasis, nourishes deficiency, lowers cholesterol.
[Indicated for] Chronic bronchitis with cough, phlegm, chest tightness, shortness of breath, food stagnation, diabetes, alcohol intoxication, cancer, hyperlipidemia, hypertension, stroke, etc.
[Note] Regular consumption improves facial complexion and skin texture, achieving beauty benefits. Diabetics may add a little salt. Not recommended for those with spleen-stomach deficiency-cold. Avoid concurrent use with Rehmannia and Polygonum multiflorum.
10. Radish Tea
[Composition] 5g tea leaves, 100g white radish, 6g ginger
[Preparation] Steep tea leaves in boiling water to extract juice. Slice radish and ginger, boil until soft, add salt for seasoning, pour in tea juice, and serve.
[Dietary method] Consume twice daily.
[Function] Clears heat, transforms phlegm, lowers qi, broadens the chest.
[Indicated for] Cough with excessive phlegm.
11. Radish Seed Porridge
[Composition] 20g Raphani Semen (radish seeds), 50g glutinous rice (half dose for children)
[Preparation] Grind radish seeds with water, filter to obtain about 100ml juice. Mix with glutinous rice and add about 350ml water, then cook into a thin porridge.
[Dietary method] Consume twice daily, warm.
[Function] Aids digestion, relieves distension, lowers qi, transforms phlegm.
[Indicated for] Food stagnation, chest tightness, bloating, belching, acid regurgitation, diarrhea, excessive phlegm, cough, and asthma.
