Comment: Deer root refers to the rhizome and roots of *Smilax china* (Liliaceae), with sweet and bitter taste, warm nature. According to "Supplement to the Classic of Materia Medica," its sweetness nourishes blood, enters spleen, and warm nature strengthens yang qi; thus it treats wind-blood disorders and dispels cold, enhancing vitality and stimulating yang. It belongs to the same botanical group as Polygonatum, Polygonatum, and Lycium. Its flavor and aroma are mild, non-toxic, and besides tonification, it has no other therapeutic effects.
