Traditional Chinese Medicine Treatment for Stroke
(1) Wind Invading the Channels and Collaterals Type
Symptoms: Hemiplegia, facial deviation, impaired skin sensation, fever with chills, pale red tongue, thin white coating on the tongue, slippery or taut pulse.
Formula: Cinnamon twig 6g, processed Aconite root 5g, Ephedra herb 5g, Fangfeng, Fangji, and Angelica root each 12g, ginseng, Chuanxiong, white peony root, apricot kernel, Astragalus root, and licorice root each 10g, fresh ginger 5 slices.
(2) Bowel Obstruction Type
Symptoms: Hemiplegia, facial deviation, fullness in the epigastrium, constipation, yellowish-red urine, dizziness, irritability, red tongue, yellow or greasy coating, slippery or taut pulse.
Formula: Magnolia bark, rhubarb, Citrus fruit, and licorice root each 10g.
(3) Qi Deficiency with Phlegm Obstruction Type
Symptoms: Hemiplegia, facial deviation, sallow complexion, speech difficulty, clear and thin phlegm, dizziness or blurred vision, pale tongue with tooth marks, white slippery or greasy coating, slippery or taut pulse.
Formula: Modified Six Gentlemen Decoction: ginseng and licorice root each 10g, Poria, Atractylodes, and tangerine peel each 15g, Pinellia tuber, bamboo shavings, and processed South Star each 15g.
(4) Qi Deficiency with Blood Stasis Type
Symptoms: Limb flaccidity, muscle spasms or pain, pale or dark purple tongue with ecchymosis, thin white coating, deep fine or stagnant pulse.
Formula: Bu Yang Huan Wu Tang: raw Astragalus root 30g, Angelica root, peach kernel, red peony root, Chuanxiong, fried earthworm, and safflower each 15g.
(5) Qi Stagnation in the Channels Type
Symptoms: Limb paralysis or facial deviation, distension in chest and hypochondrium, relief with sighing, epigastric fullness, pale red tongue, thin white coating, taut pulse.
Formula: Eight-Ingredient Smooth Qi Powder: ginseng, Atractylodes, white芷, Wu Yao, and green peel each 10g, Poria and tangerine peel each 15g, licorice root 8g.
(6) Exuberant Heat Due to Pathogenic Factors Type
Symptoms: Hemiplegia, facial deviation, flushed face, thirst with preference for cold drinks, yellowish-red urine, red tongue with yellow coating, rapid and forceful pulse.
Formula: Ligusticum root, white peony root, Atractylodes, chrysanthemum flower, platycodon root, Schizonepeta spike, honeysuckle flower, Scutellaria root, cold water stone each 10g, Angelica root and gypsum each 15g, cardamom seed, mint, talc, and rhubarb each 5g.
(7) Dual Deficiency of Qi and Blood Type
Symptoms: Weakness and flaccidity of limbs, possible swelling, pale complexion, shortness of breath, weak speech, low voice, aversion to wind with spontaneous sweating, pale white tongue with tooth marks, fine weak pulse.
Formula: Eight Treasures Decoction: ginseng, Atractylodes, Chuanxiong, white peony root, and licorice root each 10g, Rehmannia glutinosa (prepared), Poria, and Angelica root each 15g.
(8) Liver Wind Accompanied by Phlegm Type
Symptoms: Hemiplegia, facial deviation, dizziness or headache, irritability, easy anger, excessive phlegm, limb numbness, red tongue with white greasy coating, taut or slippery pulse.
Formula: Atractylodes, Poria, Gastrodia, and tangerine peel each 15g, Pinellia tuber and licorice root each 10g, fresh ginger 3 slices, jujube 3 pieces.
