Several Contraindications of Foot Massage

🔑 Keywords: Other · Acupuncture and Tuina
Foot rubbing is a traditional Chinese health-preserving therapy. From a TCM perspective, many acupoints are concentrated on the sole of the foot. Regular massage of these areas can effectively regulate human metabolism, promote endocrine balance, and achieve fitness and disease prevention. For example, the Yongquan point—named for its function as the source of vital energy—stimulation of this point can restore vitality, enhance health, and prolong life.
Based on self-symptoms, locate corresponding reflex zones; use techniques such as rubbing, kneading, pressing, or applying pressure to stimulate relevant acupoints. The reflex zones for various body parts are located on the same side of the foot except for organs in the head, which are reflected on the opposite foot.
Massage should pay attention to the following points:
1. Do not massage within one hour after meals; continuous stimulation on one area generally does not exceed five minutes.
2. When using fingers for massage, keep nails trimmed; when using other tools, ensure they are smooth and free of sharp edges to avoid skin injury. Mild pain, fatigue, or dry mouth during massage (more noticeable in arthritis patients) are normal phenomena.
3. Within 30 minutes after massage, drink warm water above 50°C (for kidney and heart disease patients, only 150cc needed).
4. Patients with heart disease, diabetes, kidney disease, hypertension, or epilepsy should limit massage time to no more than 10 minutes.
5. After massage, capillaries are dilated and body temperature slightly increases; avoid washing the massaged area with cold water or wiping it with a cold towel. (Deng Qingyin)
