Moxibustion at Zhiyin Point Can Correct Fetal Position
In ancient China, childbirth was extremely dangerous. With no modern medical equipment or technology, even normal pregnancies could result in death due to infection, let alone ectopic pregnancy. Yet, through struggle with nature, laborers developed many effective remedies. Moxibustion at Zhiyin Point is one such method enabling normal delivery. Though the mechanism remains incompletely understood today, clinical practice confirms its scientific validity.
Zhiyin Point is a point on the Bladder Meridian (Foot Taiyang), located on the lateral side of the little toe. The *Medical Canon of Golden Mirror* records this point for treating difficult labor caused by malpositioned fetus.
Numerous reports confirm moxibustion’s role in correcting fetal position. Clinical applications are widespread. One report states that among 2,069 pregnant women with abnormal fetal positions during weeks 29–40 of gestation, 1,869 cases saw correction—accounting for 90.3% of total treated cases. In a study of 41 cases, researchers inferred that moxibustion at Zhiyin Point increases adrenocorticotropic hormone secretion, enhancing uterine activity and fetal movement. These dynamic factors assist spontaneous fetal repositioning.
Moxibustion at Zhiyin Point is also effective for other gynecological conditions such as menstrual disorders, menorrhagia, leukorrhea, dysmenorrhea, perimenopausal syndrome, mastitis, and breast nodules. Thus, Zhiyin Point is a key acupoint for gynecological health.
