Auricular Acupoint Medication for Lower Limb Ulcers

🔑 Keywords: Other · Acupuncture and Tuina
“Old rotten leg” is a colloquial term for lower limb ulcers, the most common complication of lower limb varicose veins. This condition arises due to impaired venous return in the lower limbs, resulting in wounds that fail to heal for long periods, severely affecting patients’ quality of life and work capacity, making it one of the most challenging surgical conditions.
Professor Cui Gongrang from the First Affiliated Hospital of Henan College of Traditional Chinese Medicine developed a new method for treating lower limb ulcers based on traditional Chinese meridian theory and folk remedies after years of research—auricular acupoint micro-medication combined with local wound cleaning and dressing changes—with excellent results.
Lower limb varicosity may result from primary valve disease or secondary venous obstruction. Its severe complications include lower limb ulcers, which commonly occur on the anterior tibia, medial malleolus, and lateral malleolus. Surrounding tissue thickens, skin darkens and hardens, presenting symptoms of stasis dermatitis. The ulcer margins are neat, the base contains abundant necrotic tissue and exudate, and healing is difficult. Auricular acupoint micro-medication is suitable for fresh ulcers as well as stubborn, non-healing ulcers.
Medicine formula: Chuanxiong and Danggui, each 10 grams; Meibian, 2 grams; Xiangxiang, 0.3 grams; Xuejie, 5 grams. Grind into fine powder. Mark the central part of the posterior auricular groove, disinfect routinely, then use a sterilized needle to puncture the skin until slight bleeding occurs. Apply the homemade herbal powder (about the size of three millet grains), secure with adhesive tape. Remove medication after 48 hours and disinfect locally. Alternate ears every other day, while simultaneously performing local wound cleaning and dressing changes.
Auricular acupoint micro-medication for lower limb ulcers has three main effects:
① Significant analgesic effect. After auricular medication, lower limb pain markedly decreases, sometimes even disappears.
② Antibacterial and anti-inflammatory effect. Clinical observation shows that for cases with inflammatory infiltration, combining auricular medication with local cleaning and dressing changes leads to noticeable reduction in inflammation after 3–5 treatments, decreased wound exudate, and visible granulation tissue formation.
③ Promotes wound healing. For wounds less than 1 cm in diameter, healing typically occurs after about 10 treatments. For wounds up to 5 cm in diameter, significant reduction in size is observed after 10 treatments, with visible granulation tissue. Even for larger wounds, signs of new granulation tissue appear after treatment.
Based on meridian theory and the holistic theory of the human body, the auricle resembles a reversed image of the fetus, reflecting pathological changes in internal organs and limbs throughout the body. The diagnosis and treatment of diseases through auricular acupoints have been documented in ancient Chinese medical literature.
