Massage Techniques for Treating Allergic Rhinitis

🔑 Keywords: Other · Acupuncture and Tuina
The nose is likened to the kitchen exhaust fan of the face. Located centrally on the face, it is not only crucial for smelling odors but also serves as the passage for air entering the lungs and carbon dioxide exiting. Its patency directly impacts quality of life and health.
What Is Allergic Rhinitis?
Allergic rhinitis is a common cause of nasal obstruction. Also known as allergic rhinitis, it includes perennial and seasonal types. Its onset is complex, related to factors such as hormonal imbalance, nervous and mental stress, antigen-antibody reactions, and genetic predisposition.
Five Major Symptoms of Allergic Rhinitis: Nasal congestion; sneezing; nasal itching; watery nasal discharge; reduced sense of smell. These symptoms are particularly evident in the morning and during seasonal changes and tend to recur persistently.
Massage Therapy for Allergic Rhinitis
Patients with allergic rhinitis may receive medication treatment, such as oral chlorpheniramine, 4 mg three times daily, or 1%–2% ephedrine nasal drops, applied 2–3 times daily, 1–2 drops each time. However, medication only alleviates symptoms and does not cure the condition.
Prevention and health preservation are key in treating allergic rhinitis. Avoid allergens and prevent recurrent respiratory infections. Based on years of clinical experience, I have developed a nasal health exercise routine to treat allergic rhinitis and relieve nasal congestion. Results are impressive—nasal blockage clears immediately after massage, and noticeable improvement occurs in allergic rhinitis patients after one month. Here’s how:
Massage Yíngxiāng, Bítōng, and Yìntáng acupoints for 1–2 minutes each, pinch and rub the nasal wings for 1–2 minutes. Perform once in the morning and once in the evening; increase to 1–2 additional sessions daily if symptomatic.
Yíngxiāng: Located on either side of the nose, in the nasolabial groove. A key point for treating nasal obstruction and loss of smell;
Bítōng: Located on either side of the nose, at the upper end of the nasolabial groove;
Yìntáng: Located at the midpoint of the line connecting the inner ends of the eyebrows.
Massage Bítōng and Yìntáng to disperse local heat and open nasal passages.

Additionally, pinching and rubbing the nasal wings promote blood circulation in the nasal area, improving local microcirculation and effectively opening nasal passages.
Many children suffer from allergic rhinitis, mainly due to the lack of nasal hairs in infants and young children, delicate nasal mucosa rich in blood vessels, making them prone to infection. Infection causes nasal mucosal congestion and swelling, narrowing the already narrow nasal cavity, sometimes leading to complete blockage and breathing difficulties. The nasal health exercise can also benefit children, with excellent results.
