"Rubbing Away" Stiff Neck Remedies

🔑 Keywords: Other · Acupuncture and Tuina
Stiff neck, also known as "loss of pillow."
Causes of stiff neck include:
1. Sleeping with a pillow that is too high or too low, causing neck muscle spasms and fatigue. If one sleeps too deeply, the body turns but the neck doesn’t follow, leaving the neck in an awkward position, leading to irritation and pain.
2. Exposure to cold drafts during sleep due to open windows or doors at night, resulting in chill and pain.
Most cases of stiff neck pain last 2–3 days and usually resolve spontaneously without treatment. However, if faster relief and earlier recovery are desired, consider the following measures.
1. Cold Compress:
Stiff neck typically constitutes an acute injury, often presenting localized pain and stiffness. Within 48 hours, only cold compresses should be used. Wrap small ice cubes in a towel and apply to the affected area for 15–20 minutes, twice daily. For severe cases, apply every hour.
2. Heat Compress:
Once inflammation and pain subside, switch to heat therapy. Use a warm wet towel, infrared heater, or fill a saltwater bottle with hot water and dry-apply it.
3. Massage:
If neck and shoulder pain persists after the above treatments, use the "separating fibers" massage technique, preferably with assistance from a family member. The patient sits upright, exposing the neck and shoulders. The practitioner stands behind the patient, applies a small amount of Honghua oil or Shujin oil to the affected shoulder, uses the left hand to support the top of the patient’s head, and with the right thumb, gently rubs and pushes outward from the painful spot to separate the contracted muscle fibers. Perform 3–6 times daily. Generally, after this massage, neck and shoulder pain significantly eases.
