Foot Reflexology as Both Wellness and Treatment

🔑 Keywords: Other · Acupuncture and Massage
Doctors treat patients through massage of foot reflex zones.
Foot reflexology has evolved from tradition to modernity, now offered by TCM clinics, foot massage centers, modern spas, and wellness product companies—reflecting its growing popularity.
The “Foot Sole Chapter” in the *Huangdi Neijing* briefly outlines the principle: each organ and part of the body has a corresponding reflex zone on the foot. Stimulating these zones via massage regulates organ function through blood circulation and neural transmission, restoring balance and promoting health and healing.
Traditional Chinese medicine records the “Four Roots”: ear root, nose root, nipple root, and foot root—with foot root regarded as the foundation of all four. “Old age begins with the feet,” and “when trees die, roots dry first”—highlighting the foot’s critical importance.
Treatment through reflex zones
Therapist Lin Yuxin states that foot reflexology serves both as wellness and medical treatment. He says: “Walking on the ground, gravity impedes blood return. Through foot massage, we stimulate circulation, helping blood flow back upward—thus strengthening the body.”
“The soles and toes contain millions of nerves and blood vessels. Even massaging non-reflex zones slightly provides health benefits.”
In treatment, foot reflexology targets points, lines, bands, and zones on the foot and inner leg—not just reflex zones—to achieve the ultimate goal of relaxing meridians and calming nerves.
Is pain during massage due to the therapist or the patient?
He says: “Massage should make the patient feel comfortable. If pain occurs and the patient pulls their feet back, it indicates excessive pressure.”
Pain During Massage Should Be Avoided
“When massaging a heart patient, therapists must avoid causing pain—pressure should be gentle and stopped when comfort is achieved. If the patient cries out in pain, it may overload the heart, disrupt blood pressure, and produce adverse effects.”
Diabetic patients often lose their feet due to peripheral nerve complications. Diabetics should regularly receive foot massage to ensure blood reaches the extremities.
Patients with kidney disease should also benefit from foot reflexology. However, if muscle necrosis or ulcers are present, massage is contraindicated.
Foot reflexology provides the greatest benefit to chronic illness sufferers—such as those with insomnia or weak constitutions—whose conditions improve significantly after massage.
Not Necessarily Daily
Given its benefits, can foot reflexology be done daily? Lin Yuxin replies: “Patients don’t need daily sessions—this may harm muscles. After one session, muscles relax and circulation improves. Effects last at least one day, so every other day is sufficient.”
Various foot reflexology devices are sold commercially, stimulating foot acupoints to promote circulation, relieve joint discomfort, ease hand stiffness, and boost metabolism.
Lin Yuxin notes these wellness products mainly serve as auxiliary tools, effectively relaxing muscles and improving blood circulation.
He adds: “However, users must tailor massage to their constitution and avoid prolonged sessions.”
