The Effects and Characteristics of Tuina

🔑 Keywords: Other · Acupuncture and Tuina
1. Health-Preserving Effects of Tuina
(1) Unblocking meridians. *Huangdi Neijing* states: “When meridians are blocked, illness arises from numbness; treat with massage,” indicating massage’s ability to unblock meridians. For example, massaging Zusanli and pushing the spleen meridian increases digestive fluid secretion. From a modern medical perspective, massage primarily stimulates peripheral nerves, promotes blood and lymph circulation, and enhances intertissue metabolic processes, coordinating organ functions and elevating metabolic levels.
(2) Harmonizing blood and qi. Ming Dynasty health expert Luo Hong wrote in *Wanshou Xianshu*: “Massage can open pores and circulate nutritive and defensive qi.” “Circulating nutritive and defensive qi” refers to harmonizing blood and qi. Massage applies gentle, soft force along meridians and acupoints, regulating the entire body through meridian transmission, thus balancing blood and qi and enhancing health. Modern medicine believes mechanical stimulation from tuina converts mechanical energy into thermal energy, increasing local tissue temperature, dilating capillaries, improving blood and lymph circulation, reducing blood viscosity, lowering vascular resistance, and easing cardiac workload—thus preventing cardiovascular diseases.

(3) Enhancing immune function. For instance, children with dysentery show symptom reduction or disappearance after tuina; when children have dry and wet rales in the lungs, massaging Xiaohengwen (small transverse wrinkle) on the palm is effective. Some studies compared children receiving health tuina with controls; the tuina group showed lower incidence rates, higher height, weight, and appetite. Clinical evidence and animal experiments confirm tuina has anti-inflammatory, antipyretic, and immunity-enhancing effects, boosting resistance to disease.
Due to tuina’s ability to unblock meridians, promote blood and qi flow, and maintain yin-yang balance, users often feel relaxed muscles, improved joint mobility, mental alertness, reduced fatigue, and significant contributions to overall health.
2. Main Characteristics of Tuina Health Preservation
Tuina is economical and convenient—it requires no special medical equipment and is不受 time, location, or climate constraints. It is safe, reliable, easy to learn and use, with no side effects. These advantages make tuina a popular health-preserving practice among the public. For healthy individuals, it enhances natural disease resistance and achieves health benefits; for patients, it relieves local symptoms and accelerates functional recovery, yielding excellent therapeutic outcomes.
3. Precautions
(1) Mental and physical relaxation. Besides focusing the mind, remain calm and relaxed; avoid tension throughout the body—both mind and body must be relaxed.
(2) Accurate acupoint selection. Master common acupoint locations and manipulation techniques to ensure accurate placement and proper technique.
(3) Appropriate force. Too light lacks effect; too heavy causes fatigue and may damage skin.
(4) Gradual progression. Start with fewer sessions, gradually increase frequency; begin with light pressure, gradually increase; slowly add more acupoints.
(5) Consistency. Whether for health preservation or chronic disease treatment, results do not appear overnight. Long-term persistence is needed for gradual improvement—patience and perseverance are essential.
Besides these precautions, timing matters: each session should last about 20 minutes. Best performed once in the morning and once before bedtime. To enhance efficacy and prevent skin damage, use lubricants like talcum powder, sesame oil, or massage cream. Do not perform tuina on broken skin, ulcers, fractures, tuberculosis, tumors, or bleeding sites. When self-massaging, wear only a vest and shorts; keep hands in direct contact with skin. After tuina, if sweating occurs, avoid drafts to prevent catching a cold. Avoid health tuina when excessively hungry, full, drunk, or overly fatigued.
