Depression Leading to Dementia

Recent scientific research indicates that depression may be a potential trigger for dementia. In this latest study, scientists surveyed 4,000 people, half of whom had dementia. Findings revealed that dementia correlates with depression history, past head injuries, and education level.
In the studied group, 14% of dementia patients had a 25-year history of depression. The study found that when depression becomes severe, it accelerates the onset of dementia. Thus, individuals who develop depression early in life are more likely to suffer from dementia in old age, as prolonged depression damages the brain, and aging itself makes the brain more vulnerable.
Researchers explain that dementia is a progressive degenerative brain disease causing difficulty remembering recent events. Common symptoms include memory loss affecting work ability, difficulty performing familiar tasks, language disorders, confusion about time and space, reduced judgment, inability to think abstractly, frequently misplacing items, mood swings, and significant personality changes. Although progression varies among individuals, all eventually become confused, struggle with communication—often unable to express thoughts clearly, speaking incoherently, losing direction—and ultimately become unable to care for themselves.
In recent years, despite rising living standards, the number of dementia patients has rapidly increased. Although the exact cause remains unknown, most scientists believe dementia results from multiple factors such as advanced age, family history, and genetic influences.
